C&P folks - do you pay attention to the person you are quoting?

When you see a quote you like do you start C&Ping it around the web, or do you look into the author first?

A childhood friend on my facebook posted as her status words which she obviously didn't write. They weren't attributed, so I googled. The writer of said quotes is a straight-up crazy racist who for instance actually proudly writes in defense of slavery on his website - complete with biblical back up.

Now what she posted wasn't anything along those lines. It was borderline wacky though. Borderline enough to make me curious enough to spend a moment digging. She is claiming innocence, that she does not support this guy's crazy ideals... seems to me, you have to be spending time with online whackjobs in order to see someone like this nutjob quoted.

Or am I being unfair? Do people just run with a paragraph, posting it around the web without any background?

In the rare instances where I C and P, I usually don't dig up the author, but only C and P from big name news sources, or such.
