A candidate for City Council in Queens is standing by comments made during a recent interview, which many are calling racist. NY1's Cefaan Kim filed the following report.
A heated confrontation erupted Tuesday outside the campaign office of City Council candidate Eduardo Giraldo. At issue are racially tinged comments Giraldo made back in June on public access television.
"Now what's the best blood for Latinos? Our own blood. The blood of blacks has problems, the blood of Europeans has problems. And the best blood for us Latinos, is the blood of Latinos because it has the antigens that make us different," Giraldo said.
The 30 second clip was posted anonymously on the website YouTube a few days ago.
"I am not here calling him a racist. I'm just saying they were stupid and ignorant comments that should never have been made," said Grand Council of Guardians Chairman Charles Billups.
Giraldo is standing by his comments, but says his statements are being twisted and taken out of context. He's also alleging his opponent's campaign, incumbent Julissa Ferraras, is responsible for pushing the issue.
After losing to Ferraras in a special election earlier this year, Giraldo is now gunning for the seat in this fall's primary election.
In a statement, Ferraras' campaign said, "The Ferraras campaign denies any involvement...The clip speaks for itself; It's both shocking and inexcusable."
"I'm not a racist. To say that Latino blood is best for Latinos is a scientific fact. As well as African-American blood is best for African-Americans," Giraldo said.
Giraldo says in the web clip he was talking about a program he created four years ago, addressing the need for Latinos to donate more blood -- a claim Bal Gilja, the medical director of Elmhurst Hospital Center's blood bank, disputes.
"Race does not play a role in donating or receiving blood," Gilja said.
The New York Blood Center agreed with Gilja, but added, "For patients who receive many, many transfusions over time, finding a blood match becomes increasingly difficult, and this is where precise matching (antigens) is important."
Voters NY1 spoke with Tuesday expressed mixed opinions.
"People are running for politics, but we become so involved in the racist thing, but we forget this is about donating blood," said Jackson Heights resident Nely Diez.
"I personally feel that he's probably down in the polls and this is the only way he can get publicity," said Jackson Heights resident Ralph Rivera.
The Democratic primary for the race will be held on September 15th.
