And you know the funniest part? Bahasa Indonesia (dan Melayu; really they are mutually intelligible) is one of the easiest languages in the world to learn.

Indonesia is a predominantly Muslim country (the largest Muslim country in the world in fact) but it is not a wholly Muslim country. You actually have to register your religion there (either Muslim, Catholic, Protestant, Hindu or Buddhist) and out east it is majority Catholic. In fact, when I studied there one of my teachers was Catholic from Flores and the other was ethnically Chinese and claimed to be Buddhist (though her family didn't really practice ANY religion beyond Chinese spiritism/Taoism; it wasn't recognized by the government as a religion). Many tribals claim to be Hindus (or Muslims or Christians) for much the same reason.
Again... more people care about Indonesia than your cultureless stretch of farm country in the fly-over states :-D
