How To be a good poster on the How To forum
A few pointers for new people:
One: If it's not on the first page, don't bump it unless you have a really great reason. Often, bumping old threads is annoying and pointless and can really stir up trouble.
Two: Search the entire forums, that means not just this one, if you have a question. Unless it's something really off the wall, I promise you that you'll find what you're looking for already posted. This website has been around for YEARS and there's thousands of people on it, someone has probably come here long before you, wanting to know the exact same thing as you.
Three: If you bump old threads, post spam, make fluff threads (pointless conversational threads that don't belong in a How To forum) or you make yet another "How do I post an avatar?" or "How to make anal more enjoyable?" thread, you might get flamed. Please be prepared to see cranky replies from people that are tired of new people's laziness in doing a little research before posting here. You have been warned fairly.

four: if you want to ask a question for which you need advice, post the question here as a new thread. but otherwise: for the love of pete, don't bother.

One of the hallmarks of the How To/HT Café is the integrity of the posters to be respectful and mature. It's a board where people can come to ask questions and share issues without concern of being flamed or ridiculed, eg the only stupid question is the one not asked. (Of course no one is perfect and it's true there are times/people that turn things upside down.)
There are philosophers who believe we cannot have an original thought, no matter what you're thinking it has already been thought before. Well, that doesn't stop us from thinking, and best of all, we can all think differently. So if a question or issue is repeated, it's another chance to look at it, perhaps from a different view. Our experiences add to our growth, we have more to share with others which enhances the forum, and us, too, IMHO.
The AV question...sure we've answered it over and over, but there are some newer Litster/HTers that haven't and I see it as an opportunity for someone to jump in and give assistance. It allows for people to feel a part of the board; it's not always easy to join in what seems to be a tight group. I very rarely answer the question anymore, I don't need to because someone else can and will. When I see the question I might feel an "ugh that again" but mostly I just move on to another thread. Sometimes we just have to let a pet peeve roll off our back.
I think inclusiveness and uniqueness should be encouraged.
PS: Regarding the sexual position thread, the only thought I had was that we already have one, and it's a fun thread to boot!

Please give your new thread a descriptive title - i.e. mention the subject matter, rather than just using the title "need advice", "need help" "advice please" etc etc etc.

Don't be like that silverwhisper guy.
Come to think of it, actually pay attention to the thread you started, come back and read it on a regular basis, though be patient for pete's sake.
Patient part is a problem on occassion in Story Idea's, rather annoying.

another thing: for your own sake, read the whole thread before replying.
if you don't, you run the risk of being "that guy". you know "that guy": he's the one who responds to the tenth e-mail in a 20odd e-mail conversation and doesn't realize that whatever he's said's already been said, and the conversation's moved on. then, when he does notice, he just looks like he wasn't paying any attention.
which of course, he wasn't.

My that was welcoming. (baby kicking too much?)
While I do get frustrated at some of the issues you've commented on here, I prefer to be more understanding of newbies and figure that it comes with the territory. I also don't expect them to have figured out how to use the search function yet so wouldn't have expected them to do full research. Let's get real. Most people that have been around for ages don't even research a question before they post it. Suggesting a lot of their questions may be answered in the library though is easier for them.

I agree WW, also, just because an issue has been discussed in threads past, I don't what's wrong with having another go at it with new thoughts and contributors.
Maybe the baby is kicking -- or not.

Not to be a stickler, but wouldn't that be virtual-e?

Two or three years ago, Blue Sugar, of Blank Manual fame, came back to Lit after an extended absence and complained that there weren't any good threads to add to the manual because they'd all been derailed by hijacks. She suggested that people try to stay on topic for at least the first 10 posts. I'm not sure how serious she was, but I don't think anyone took her seriously.

Nipple I thought you liked dangling things.
Brings up a question though, how exactly is a newbie supposed to be serious when we usually aren't?

I've found that when I become even less tolerant than usual regarding certain topics that I'm probably overdue for a short-term Lit break.
ETA: Except for cock threads. I'm permanently cock-thread intolerant.

Smacking him before we measure it? Gutsy girly.
We can use some kind of scale from slapstick to seriously reverent...maybe. Is it possible? Eh, yeah. Is it probable? Nope.
I cannot live without Eilan handling all the 'size' inquiries, or Quoll's wit and his knack of stringing words together that send me looking for a dictionary (which isn't always helpful), Ed and BG exchanges of perviness and bunches of other fun, entertaining and educational too.

It is kind of festive, isn't it? As cold as it's been here this month, it may as well be Christmas. I'm just early--or late!

The answer is 'no'.
and no I'm not going to do any *more* research on that topic.

Thank you
That is appreciated. What I am trying for, however, is getting my personal blog outside of here a little (or a lot) bigger.
Any suggestions?
Julian
