The Best Of A Bad Situation [Closed]

The man took a deep breath and stared at the ceiling. How the hell did he end up here? Sure he could have re-enlisted and be in some unknown foreign land getting shot at again, but it sure would beat dealing with these political types. He shook the thoughts from his mind and headed up the elaborate stairs to the master bedroom. From what little he saw all the things the husband had said about this woman were true and she was going to be a massive pain in the ass. In the master closet he found two large luggage bags and began filling them with assorted clothes for Leliana. He felt no shame about going through her unmentionables and private things, knowing full well he’d get an earful about it later on.

After packing most of Leliana’s items he took both suitcases to his rental car out front and loaded them in the the trunk. Pausing outside to admire the outside of the gorgeous estate, he collected himself, double checked the pistol he had on the inside of the driver side door, and under his armpit and headed back inside. On his way to the library he marveled at all the expensive paintings on the walls, most of which just looked like finger paintings to him.

The things these rich people spend their money on.

He entered to library to find Leliana sitting on the leather sofa reading some novel the size of a dictionary

“Good evening ma’am. My name is Victor Willis. I’ve been assigned to protect you for the foreseeable future. I’ve already loaded some clothes and hygiene items for you in the car. If you would like anything else to take now would be the time to get them”

Before she could utter a response Victor raised his hand preemptively cutting her off.

“Ma’am with all due respect I really have no interest in what you have to say right now. My only job is to keep you safe and I intend on doing that. We are already short on time so if you want to bust my balls you can do it in the car. We’re wheels up in 10 minutes, if you are not in the car by then... well, please just be in the car.”

Before Leliana could say a word Victor exited the library and closed the door behind him. He walked to the car, sat in the drivers seat and made a silent bet with himself on whether or not he would have to drag this woman to the car. Victor had had to detain insurgents before but none that looked quite like that. Closing his eyes he fought those thoughts out of his mind and told himself to remain professional.

Leliana was taking too long. How hard is it to follow simple orders. Victor sighed heavily as he prepared to reenter the large house. The situation was already off to a rough start and this conversation was likely to make things no better. He exited the vehicle. Knowing that some people get nervous around weapons, he removed his navy jacket and tossed it in the passenger seat of the car revealing his side arm.

After heading inside and once again up the stairs, Victor straightened his tie, adjusted his holster, and knocked on the bedroom door before entering.

“Is there a reason you are past my time hack ma’am?”

“Aye, if ye want a lady packed it takes more than ten minutes if she has no idea where she's going or what she needs. Extra if a boar rampages through her things and shoves it in a bag recklessly first. Ye could hae simply asked me t' pack Mr. Willis. My limbs function fine."

Victor thought about this. Better he share at least a little bit with her to avoid anymore unpleasantness.

“I apologize if I have offended you ma’am. I’m just trying to do my job. Pack warm. And leave your phone here. Anything with a connection to the internet for that matter”

"Everything about this is offensive. But tis not yer fault. What am I supposed t' do fer work without my phone or laptop? How will I keep in touch with my family?'

“I have already notified your work with a cover story about medical issues. Your family thinks you’re taking an extended holiday. Eventually you’ll be able to contact them but for now we really need to get moving. I’ll be waiting at the car.”

Victor exited without any further words. Eager to hit the road he started the engine and waited.

Victor thought about the question as he eyed Leliana in the rearview mirror, wishing like hell he could have a drink of whatever was in that flask. Figuring their was no reason to not tell her the truth he decided to be honest with her, expecting a whirlwind of insults or other spiteful words.

”Again Dr. Shane, I apologize for the abruptness of all of this, but if you must know, I own a cabin in the woods a few hours from here. It’s completely off the books and about as secluded as a house can get. It’s got a few rooms, fully stocked kitchen, even a lake. So you don’t have to worry about being in too close of contact with me. Within reason of course.”

He thought about telling her about the bar that he kept full of expensive alcohol, but decided against it.

Several hours later, headlights on the vehicle pierced through the night as it pulled through the rocky dirt path that barely constituted a road on it’s way to a one story cabin. The house was surrounded on 3 sides by thickly populated trees. At the back of the house past the outdoor patio, a clearing gave way to a large fire pit, and roughly 50 yards from that, a wooden dock dipping into a crystal clear lake.

Victor hadn’t so much as moved the entire ride and was needing a good stretch. He pulled the car to the open air garage on the right side of the house and put it in park before turning around to face his passenger.

“Stay here Dr. Shane. I need to check the breakers and secure the house.”[/I]

He exited the car and made his way to the wall. After opening the metal box with a key he retrieved from his pocket, he flipped a series of switches which immediately turned on several floodlights and interior lights in the house. Victor, using a different key on the same key ring, unlocked the door to the house and entered.

He moved quickly and easily, knowing that if somehow someone broke in here the alarm would have been tripped. After checking the two bedrooms and bathrooms he returned to the garage and opened the trunk to retrieve Leliana’s suitcases and brought them to her new room before she could protest.

When he returned to the car for the last time he stuck his head inside to grab his jacket and his secondary pistol.

“You’re all set Doctor. Your bedroom is the first door on the left. Anything else you need should be in the closets. Help yourself to anything at all.”

He paused before telling her the next part.

“Full disclosure there are hidden cameras set up all over the property and in every room of the house. Now, before I get accused of anything, I only check the interior cameras if I get a security alert on my phone, but I’m supremely confident there’s no risk of that.”

With that, he was headed to his favorite spot on earth: his back patio with a stiff drink and his tobacco pipe. As he walked he looked over his shoulder at Leliana.

“By the way it can drop to below 40 degrees at night. But, it’s supposed to be around 82 tomorrow.”

Without realizing it, he allowed himself to smile through the whole sentence.

He stood leaning his back against a large tree just off the patio, halfway facing towards the lake but angled enough so he could turn his head to see through the sliding glass door into the cabin. The thing Victor loved more than the solitude and quiet out here was the comfortability he could now appreciate. Thinking the good doctor had retired to bed he already had his tie removed and his dress shirt untucked, completely unbuttoned revealing several small but very distinct lines of scar tissue. Temperature was dropping but he didn’t care. He had been exposed to far greater elements than this in his life.

The Irish whiskey he sipped leveled him enough to mellow his brain. Even by the standards of his 6’4 frame he could drink a fair amount of alcohol without feeling much of the effects, not to mention his hereditary disposition from an alcoholic father. Regardless he was on duty technically, and he would allow himself only one tonight. His cheap corncob pipe had originally been a gag gift but he had learned to love it. Not as much for the smoking aspect, but the constant lighting and relighting he had to do kept his mind and hands constantly busy.

A quick glance inside the house told him Leliana had not in fact gone to bed, but instead appeared to be making dinner. He shook his head cursing himself. Not everyone was used to skipping several meals at a time like he was accustomed to, and he should have had the decency to prepare something to eat. He thought of going to apologize but decided to save it for the morning. He would awake and be working out by the tine she woke anyhow. He could cook her breakfast then. For now, he would leave her in peace unless she wanted to enjoy the outdoors tonight which he doubted.

He stared back into the night. He drank in the moonlight and glittering stars while trying to keep his mind quiet. It always wanted to go to the same dark places. After looking back in the house again he noticed how differently the woman looked. Not better or worse just different, more relaxed and at ease. And more importantly, quite beautiful. Normally he would try to silence those thoughts but it would be better to think about her in any way that the normal demons that plagued him.
