Belgian Police Use Water Cannons Against People Protesting ISIS…

Belgian police briefly used water cannon to control several hundred rowdy protesters in central Brussels on Sunday after they ignored an official call for marches to be postponed following Tuesday’s bombings.

Amid fears of further attacks, officials wanted to give police the scope to focus on investigations which have widened to other countries, leading to the arrest of an Algerian in Italy and intelligence cooperation with Germany. Police carried out 13 new raids in Belgium itself.

Hundreds nevertheless gathered at the Bourse to express solidarity with the victims of the suicide bomb attacks at Brussels airport and on a rush-hour metro train. Thirty one people were killed, including three attackers, and hundreds more injured. Islamic State has claimed responsibility.

Most of the protests were peaceful but white-helmeted riot police used the water cannon against a group of protesters, many of whom local media described as right-wing nationalists, who burst onto the square chanting and carrying banners denouncing Islamic State.

“It is highly inappropriate that protesters have disrupted the peaceful reflection at the Bourse (stock exchange). I strongly condemn these disturbances,” Prime Minister Charles Michel said according to Belga news agency.

Belgian security services are fearful that ISIS operatives may have been looking to target a nuclear plant as it emerged two workers from a plant in Doel fled to Syria to join ISIS.

One of the men, reportedly known as Ilyass Boughalab, is believed to have been killed in Syria, while the second served a short prison sentence in Belgium for terror-related offences in 2014.

With an extensive understanding of nuclear facilities, the convict’s short jail sentence has raised further questioned of the Belgian security services as well as fears he may have passed on important knowledge about the sites to the terrorist group.

The shocking revelations come after the police claimed that the death of a security guard at a nuclear facility is being treated as a criminal act rather than a terror act.

Didier Prospero, who worked for G4S security at a Belgian nuclear research centre, was shot several times in the bathroom of his home in Froidchapelle, in the Charleroi region of Belgium.
His three children found his body after they returned from school on Thursday. Mr Prospero’s sheepdog Beauce was reportedly lying dead next to him.

It had been feared the murder may be part of an ISIS plot to attack the facility and release radioactive waste into the atmosphere.

I might be showcasing my ignorance in such matters , but does anyone know when the Isis attacks on Eu soil first start? And in what context?

The first attacks were claimed by Al-Queda, not Daesh/Isis that didn't exist.

But bomb attacks in Europe have a long history. Even the IRA weren't the first and yesterday Ireland celebrated 100 years since the 1916 Easter Rising. That had been preceeded by Captain Swing and, and...

The Bosheviks/Anarchists were active bomb placers in London before 1914. The 1914/18 war started apparently because of a bomb thrown by a terrorist.

Your question is limited. ISIS/Daesh is a changed name for groups that existed before they were named ISIS. People claiming to be Muslim have caused civilian deaths in Europe for many years, for example during the French war in Algeria in the 1950s...

Because, from an outsider perspective (european imigrants who are no longer living those realities so haven't accomodated to them, I guess) things look shocking.

When I left (not That long ago) the massmedia was focused mainly on economics and so on.

Now : almost everything in the news is focused on "are the borders too fluid/ are we safe from "ISIS" attacks" and so on. Plus people seem so polarized: one is easily labelled as either an islamophobe, or a "muslim lover". Not much in-between.
Either the massmedia has become less objective and more sensationalistic, or there's a propaganda war, or something more ominous is brewing.

There is a propaganda war, and ISIS/Daesh are winning it. Attacks in Turkey, Afghanistan, Iraq etc are much more frequent and much more deadly, but they don't get the media coverage that killing Europeans in Europe does.

Notice the obvious, that it’s wet, possibly snowing; and the coats, hoods and hands in pockets convey that it’s uncomfortably cold as well. Then notice the less evident fact that the woman is shoeless, unlike any of the seven males. Also distinct from any of those males, she is carrying two small children with the toil of her burden shown in the distressed expression on her face. Notably, hers is the only face showing any strain within the group. Seven healthy, future American males but not one will share the weight of the small children with this woman, much less see to it that she has proper footwear.

Obama says that ISIS presents a distorted view of Islam so I’m compelled to ask, “Mr. President, is this an authentic view?”
