I disagree, you may assert with confidence, whilst she questions with caution. That doesn't equate with insecurity. One could with equal validity suggest that in dealing with complex questions cautious consideration may be the wiser course.

And when it comes to core issues I suspect Dolf has more limited forebearance and will take difficult decisions.

I knew a boy, his kindly aunt and her husband took him in. His mother eventually OD and killed herself when he was 3. The kid had numerous social, mental and physical issues. I'm not sure if it was all related to his mother's drug abuse but she used the entire time she was pregnant and the aunt said that's what caused his issues. This kid lived with more problems than he should have. I know the aunt who happened to be well off, spent tons of money on his care, which was his good fortune. But for the rest of his life, he will be paying for what his mother did, he will never be able to care for himself.

According to one research survey, 4 kids like him are born everyday. I feel bad for the burdens that are forced on them, even if they aren't as bad off as him. I doubt all of them have aunts as good as his.

To expect someone to care for someone else, when they don't even care for themselves is an exercise in futility.

So I say if funding is no issue then rehab. Offer them as much help as possible or give the addict an incentive.

Free housing. A welfare 'payment' system where if they do a piss or blood test and show a negative test they get food stamps or clothing vouchers etc.

Is it bribery? For sure. Hopefully some addicts would accept bribery and not partake of their poison till baby was born.

In New Zealand we have prisons where some of them have Mums and baby units. The babe stays with Mum till they are 2. There are strict rules and if you break them you are removed from the unit and baby either goes into welfare care or hopefully placed with family.
