I don't think these are the only choices. How about just writing what pleases you and putting it in the contest because the timing's right and the contest listing gives it a bit more promotion?

I'm talking about overall -- not individually.

Earth Day and Nude Day have demonstrated this every year. They're the most narrow themes, and thus generate the least participation, even though some people seem to interpret both of them as nothing more than "outdoor sex".

After 2 or 3 years of April Fools, people will start complaining again. It's too narrow.

Well, yes, that's why I favored a revolving theme. But that wasn't included as a choice. Indirectly the April Fools theme would serve that, though, because after a couple of years, folks would want to change it (thus bring revolving theme back into the mix). ;)

I've said this before, and I'll mention it again just in case anyone with decision making authority is reading. Why not adopt all four of the options? Change out two of the topics every year--the two with the least number of entries. Substitute two off the list and send the low-performers back into the pool. That way they're not gone forever, and maybe next time they can get enough participants to stay in the big leagues.

It *could* be a revolving/changing theme....

If you re-read Laurel's original OP, the winner of this theme will be presented in Spring of 2015 and we'll see how it does. If it does just okay or not all that well, Laurel will go onto the next runner-up (or put it to another discussion/vote).

Either way, we're not to take the decision we're making here and now as written in stone. It's not like the Holiday or Halloween contests which are the same every year. This one *is* potentially a revolving or changing theme...unless whatever we pick turns out to be so hugely popular that everyone wants it back again and again.

Yeah, well, I'm not sure it deserves the energy you're putting into it either.

April Fools and Spring are now neck-n-neck. I wonder what happens if they remain tied

I'm going with 'Spring is in the Air.' After a long winter, it's time to think about spending some time outside again--Spring Break--outdoor sex--picnics--walking in the woods--and, oh yes, outdoor sex.

My opinion is that the April Fool's theme would be a little too confining and wouldn't get as many entries. Just my opinion, though.

We need a PI-Day Contest for the 14th of March. :)

"She was so hot that I came after 3.14159265359 seconds."

"There were 22 girls at the party and only 7 guys...."

"I looked at the circular bed and attempted to calculate if the area was large enough for a foursome."

I think that 'Spring is in the Air' could cover the other choice 'New Beginnings', or the other way around.

Historical Erotica - I can and have written some stories with a Historic setting. Jeanne D'Artois has written more as her 'Laundry Tales' but I think some authors would find the category too restricting or too difficult to get right.

I think April Fool's would get boring after a single year.

I think that everyone is misreading the contest description:

...stories taking place anytime/anywhere prior to the current year.

I think any competent author can deal with last new year's eve or The scandals of last year's local elections -- it doesn't have to be Ancient History, it can be "I Remember Woodstock" or "What I did Last Summer"

I know that. You know that. But I think readers might penalise a story that is not 'historic' despite the description.

I have an advantage. I can write about many decades from personal experience, without breaching the under 18 rule. :D

True. An obvious historic event as a background would help, but even then nearly everyone has lived through some historic event -- 9/11 is within the lifetime of anyone legally at Lit and it would be hard to deny it was "historic."

Ah, combine topics -- Historic April Fools! I've read of an ancient Roman AFD tradition: slyly drop a fish into someone's pocket/purse/whatever. A plot bunny is hiding there. Or a plot fishy. :D

Or maybe "How the protagonist began to be an historic April's fool at a sporting match."

I haven't voted yet. Where's the "all of the above" button?

And add twenty degrees and you are describing summer loving. We have two "season" contests already, do we need a third?

I don;t think April fool's would be confining, I think it is wide open if you have a good sense of humor and are creative.

But....I can just see it now in the incest section. A bunch of stories where a guy thinks he is screwing his girlfriend in the dark or blind folded and...April Fool's its your mom/sister!

I think you're right. Incest and Loving Wives would have a field day with an April Fool's contest (LW are all "April Fool's" stories, aren't they?)

Well, well. Unless new votes come at the last minute, it looks like we're all going to have to think up an April Fool's tale or two for Spring 2015....

You guys want historic gay fiction, check out my Story, Men in arms, about two defectors from the Civil War, one from each side. I have researched hard to made it as historically accurate as possible.

I'll have to check that out. You might want to read one I did on that seven years ago: "Blue in Gray." I set it at the battle of Port Republic. Did quite a bit of research and expanded it into a Dirk Hessian (that pen name does historical GMs) e-book.

LATER: Do you mean the series "Brothers in Arms"? Can't find a "Men in Arms" story on your list. If so, I'll look into it, but it's a long series. Will take a while.
