After all, there's NO WAY IN HELL this could be real. So he ends up verbally shutting them down with a "Reason You Suck" speech, leaving them emotionally shocked.
Unoriginal scene? Yes. Tears? Perhaps. Driven to suicide? Maybe not that far.
(NOTE: I know doing something like this is petty and shallow, but as a geek, I feel it's justified).
