I bet a lot of us erotica authors would like to tune in to some those pesky Web sites stealing our stories and find the notice that's gone up on the megaupload.com site.

My anti-virus went nuts when I clicked on the link. But yeah, total agreement. I've had to deal with pirate sites stealing my ebooks too. Well, DSP did. It's... frustrating, to say the least. That's the nicest way I can put it. And seems to go hand-in hand with being published.

Ah, sorry about the virus issue. My publisher sent it to me as an example of what he'd like to see more of. Maybe it's just virus spoof.

Sooo, everyone else, it was just a very strict and official-looking announcement of five or six copyright regulations that were being used to shut the site down.

Mega was shut down in Jan and the owners and high ups were arrested.

They were RIDICULOUS in their theft (I think I remember something like they tried to download all of youtube to their own servers.)

I wouldnt use this as a hopefully measuring stick or anything. They were too off the rails to ignore anymore thats all.

Oh and the virus thing is simple a similarity function. Computers are fine, its just a similar signature is all (some fake/trojan websites will use a faux notice to look like the illegit site that got shut down (irony of ironies, yes) If its the proper now american owned site, youre fine.

Perhaps your publisher really needs to address the problems of propagating viruses as well as what literary works make it to the public?

What's sad is a lot of people will be upset this shut down.

Many, not all of course, seem to think its just fine to pirate and steal songs and movies.

The average person that you would consider otherwise law abiding has no issue with their friend giving them a burned copy of a movie or going onto a site like limewire(if they have not been shut down yet) and download free music.

Along with this is that ghetto mentality that "well they all have millions so why do they care?"

Well by that logic the guy down the street from me has 4 cars so I guess it would be okay for me to take one, because why does he need all four?

Prince does not allow his songs on you tube. when they go up there they eventually get pulled. Read the comments its a bunch of vultures calling him a tool because he doesn't want to give away his music.

An actor, musician, a writer( that is not putting their stuff on a site like this for free) are entitled to make money off their trade and they do not have to give it away.

Goes along with the general feeling of self entitlement that is killing this society. You can earn it, or you can just try to find it or free or wait for it to be handed to you.

These people of course are the first ones to say "what a shame" when businesses go under. Perhaps they wouldn't if you weren't stealing from them.

Good for the feds and even better for whoever kept reporting that site.

Or it maybe a case of what browser your running or what protection you have because the link didn't send any flags up on my laptop.

According to others here, there's no virus on that site--so maybe my publisher knows more about these things than you do.

The other option is that it is an ISP tracker program, checking and logging the ISP's that come onto the site.

Gathering data on users.

I think I may have stumbled into one of those recently. Suddenly I went from getting one or 2 e-mails a day in my spam folder to around 25-30.

Then again when you click on as many porn sites as I do

Go through and dump all the cookies from the porn sites and anywhere else you don't go normally.

Also download Spybot search and destroy. After you update it, go to immunize and it will block a whole bunch of the cookies from sites and block known bad spyware sites.

OK, forgotten. But it hadn't set off any antivirus alarms in my computer either--I was just giving the possibility a huge benefit of doubt.

It is particularly interesting to see criminal law rather than a civil law dispute being used to deal with and shut these people down. All credit to the agencies concerned.

Recently, pursuant to my own business interests I have had to take civil action (damned expensive) in OZ, UK, and HK to protect copyright and intellectual property interests (nothing to do with stories) In those 3 jurisdictions none of the agencies responsible for infringement of the criminal codes was prepared to act.

Most countries, unfortunately, regard copyright infringement and the theft of intellectual property as a victimless crime - which it ain't.

For example, I can get an injunction/court order to "cease and desist" say in UK or HK, and that is assented to. Then literally within a day or so the same theft is being perpetrated from Guangzhou or Shanghai. Unconnected of course
