those views on a pending story...
What's the most anyone has gotten before the story went live?
I remember getting 12, maybe 16, back in the day.
I submitted a poem in the wee hours last night-- it already has 42 false views. I just got a chuckle out of that.

I had previously seen a high of 64.
But my last story went up to 96.
Am I the only one to notice they are always in 2's and 4's?

I racked up 47 views on a story once before being approved. I figgered someone was reading a couple paras, clicking out, logging in, reading ... rinse and repeat.
Seriously, I wonder how/why this happens?

Ah, that explains why they are on an erotic reading site.
Tom, the leading guess is that the views come from bots climbing in the mainframe.

I have a story right now with 114.
I've also noticed the last couple of times, stories have been approved the night before, with the next day's date, which is when they are published.
Magic.

I bet they're building nests in there, which would explain the periodic glitches in the site. Does Orkin handle that sort of thing?

I don't know about Orkin but someone needs to get in there with a flamethrower and a pitchfork.
108 views and the story is still pending. Sounds like the damned things are multiplying.
ETA: Make that 112.

Well, Tex (was it Tex?) posted that note from Laurel the other day about how Laurel and/or her assistants actually read the stories before they're posted to make sure they're acceptable per site rules. I have to imagine there are probably multiple people doing that, and maybe they just don't all know who has checked over what, and sometimes people probably go over a story bit-by-bit rather than reading the whole thing through all at once...
...though yeah, 50+ views seems like an odd number of times to review a story...

The top story on the 12 Month Top List had over 600,000 views on the first day, with very little votes/comments/favs. Obviously a glitch, but yeah, I'd say that's the most views ever on a pending story.

Make that 122 views and still pending. Now if they were votes I might get worried.
Since Manu and Laurel are the crew for Lit.....

96 views for something submitted about 3 days ago. As I recall, the others went up to similar heights.
It's odd because this is a one-page story. Someone who is skimming looking for forbidden topics, and egregious spelling/grammar errors wouldn't need to read it, like, 80 times. And then not be able to make up their minds.
I'm not even checking the submission status that often, maybe twice a day.
Must be some artifact of the way the software works.
It's a bit more likely that some indexing bot (eg. Google) has found the part of the site where the pending stories are, and is able to get past whatever controls they have in place. That would account for the steady increase each day.

I'm up to 40 views on a story I submitted last night. I have noticed that stories seem to get approved faster lately - but that could be my imagination. Oh, and speaking of my imagination, please don't burst my bubble by doubting view counts, LOL!

If views on a story that is no longer on the "recent" list gradually creep up by around 40 a day, it might be the same "phantom" views that affect it before it is approved.
However one of my fairly recent stories went up by 2000 views over two days, so that is a lot more than the pre-approved view rate. To be honest, I don't quite understand why. How do people find your stories when they aren't on the main page? Just random browsing?

Let me count the ways.
The first three days the story is on the new list. After that if the score is high enough it can be on the top 30 day list overall and/or by category. Then there is the feedback portal if it is getting lots of comments.
There are also reader groups within Lit. and on google and amazon.
Last but not least, the reader likes your story and goes to your story page and reads others.

For whatever it's worth, my latest submission is now up to 58 phantom views.
