Another thought: The Rachel Papers by Martin Amis. It's also very funny - although probably more so if you grew up in England.

Harold Robbins "Goodbye, Janette" has some fairly taboo subject matter and explicit S&M scenes.
Boggled my mind the first time I read it. Of course I was 11 or 12 at the time and had swiped the book from my mother

Jacqueline Careys books are all great. She just wrapped a new trilogy set about 100 years after the first Kushiel book. Titles all have Naamah
Definitely cant go wrong w JR Ward either. I think she has the sexiest vampires. And the more recent books explore some new areas
But i have to say (and I can't believe they haven't been mentioned!) is Diana Gabaldon's Outlander series is fantastic. An amazingly sensual and sexual love story that covers many years over 7 books ( and counting!). Some great similarities between Gabaladon's Jamie and Carey's Jocelyn
One last suggestion a new romance, is Yours to keep by Shannon Stacey. It's a pretty traditional romance but I thought the sex was quite hot. Only avilable in ebook form right now

The whole series is well written and the sex scenes are hot.

If you want something with a sense of humour, "Switch Bitch" by Roald Dahl, it is a bunch of short stories written for Playboy. He also wrote "My Uncle Oswald". Every once in a while, you think "He wrote 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory' and that makes it funnier and kinkier

Damn!
Every book I was going to list has been mentioned already. I can't suggest The Pearl enough. I have to scan my library for other suggestions. By the way, anyone use Goodreads? I find it a very good site for cataloging the books I've read and sharing with other people with my tastes.

I liked most of the Mammoth Hunters, but have to admit I was disappointed in Painted Caves. I felt like most of it was a laborious retelling of what's come before and the audience didn't really learn anything new. Also, I felt like there was major deviation from the way she previously depicted at least one of the major characters.
I'm glad I ended up borrowing that one from the library instead of purchasing it outright.

Infinity Inc...yeah, I read some of them but don't remember too much eroticism. I always liked the Huntress though. The Conan and Red Sonja comics were always good for scantily-clad gals...and dudes, too, if that's your thing
The unexpected smut that I found, as a kid, were western series. One was called Longarm and there was another about a redhead agent of some sort and her Indian partner, who both got lots of action while working their cases. Those were the reason that I always headed for the book section while my mom bought groceries.

Not sure if anybody has mentioned Henry Miller's trilogy of Sexus, Nexus and Plexus - certainly had me hard as a teenager and into my 40's. ;-)

Pornucopia by Piers Anthony. A man with swappable penises, and his adventures with a succubus. It can be pretty bad at points, but I don't think he was going for quality with this one...

it is, and its not bad, its just really slow in the middle. that and theres a lot less sex. lol. but the middle few (valley of the horses - plains of passage) definitely have a lot of really hot scenes, ive fantasized about more than one of the characters.

A good one is by Nancy Friday: Women´s Sexual Fantasies - probably as good as literotica, but written in a time when sexuality still was an adventure.
Henry Miller´s Sexus is great too.
And there are so many others...

"Captive Girl" by Jennifer Pelland. Technically not a book, but I read it in a collection of Nebula Award winners for 2007 (the story wasn't an award winner, but one of the nominees for Best Short Story). It was surprisingly erotic for a mainstream sci-fi story, and can be read online.

I was hoping someone would have commented about Fifty Shades of Grey (by E.L. James), but I didn't see anything here about it. Since it's technically considered an erotic novel (despite not having Fabio or flowers on the cover), that might be the reason it's not mentioned here. I dunno.
I haven't read it. I've heard/read completely polarizing reviews. Some people love it, some hate it. I'm tempted to give it a shot, but have little patience for poor literary craftsmanship. Has anyone here read it?

I didn't bother going through 7 pages, but I am quite partial to Diana Gabaldon's Outlander series... all the books are wonderful and have lots of steamy sex scenes of many different kinds! They are wonderful historical novels (sizeable too), and you won't regret reading them.

A new car built by my company leaves somewhere traveling at 60 mph. The rear differential locks up. The car crashes and burns with everyone trapped inside. Now, should we initiate a recall? Take the number of vehicles in the field, A, multiply by the probable rate of failure, B, multiply by the average out-of-court settlement, C. A times B times C equals X. If X is less than the cost of a recall, we don't do one. -Fight Club
