Writing A Novel...

I am currently writing a rather involved novel that will contain sex scenes but not be its main purpose and my question was this: How much description of any sex scenes is there before it looks like smut? or is there any limit because it is a sex scene? These planned scenes are not all romantic and/or sensual by the way. Can someone please give me some advice?

Hello

This might not be the best place to post this question. You might get more help if you post it in Story Discussion Circle or the main Authors' Hangout.

Cheers

As it has been said, this isn't the best place for this question. But I would think you should describe kissing and undressing. But that's it.

For example: this one will be short

'I gave soft butterfly kisses all over the nape of her neck. She couldn't see my face, and she didn't know what I was going to do to her next. I slowly had my hands make their way to her chest and I started unbuttoning her blouse, 1 button at a time. I started whispering in her ear, telling her how much she was going to love being mine tonight.

This was going to be a fun.

It's not good, but you get the picture right?

Yeah, it will depend on the wording. "Smut" to me is graphic detail... the ins and outs (so to say! hehe). If you're writing a sensual novel, you can talk about kissing, undressing, etc. You may even talk about sex or body parts but in a different way... slit instead of pussy... member instead of cock... penetration instead of fucking... OR just set the scene up and let the readers imagination go to work.

Location: Apparently the character limit for "Where you live" is remarkably generous. I live in a nice little home with a walkout basement that faces the street. That means the living area feels as if it's all "upstairs." It's on a road in the USA.

US Supreme Court Justice Potter Stewart, while trying to define hardcore pornography, in 1964, famously said, "I know it when I see it."

It's all in the eye of the beholder. As much about context as the words used to describe the act. If sex is crucial to your story, then tell it - describe it in a way that's faithful to your narrator - and let the chips fall where they may!
