Hi, everyone.

I know there are folks out there who loves them some Doctor Who - there's Powers of Ten in the ORP forum at the very least - after talking about last night's episode ("The Doctor's Wife") in the "aussies" thread over in the Playground (Australia's a week behind the UK's screening schedule), we figured we'd better set a dedicated thread up. I plumbed the forums with the search function, but nothing else seemed to come up.

So, if you love Doctor Who, please wander in and express your appreciation! It doesn't matter which Doctor or Companion or episode or villain or TARDIS control room (or sonic screwdriver) is your favourite, you love the Doctor's crazy adventures in time and space and so (I hope) does everyone else here!

Anyway, let me kick things off: If you've seen "The Doctor's Wife," What did you think? To re-hash my experiences as related in the aussies thread: I had the hugest, HUGEST lump in my throat at the end. I've never been fond of Neil Gaiman's work before. Now, I want to have that man's kids.

What did you think / feel?

Hey FelMarch,
Yes, Dr Who appreciater here! While I don't love every storyline, every companion or even every Doctor, I do love Dr Who as a whole thingamajig. Entity. Whatever. (Can't think of the word I'm looking for.)

I'm enjoying Matt Smith as the Doctor, but I will confess that he does nothing for me in terms of sexual attractiveness. My heart got stolen by the rather delicious David ******t and so far I think he will remain my fave.

In terms of Neil Gaiman being involved with Dr Who... I was a little anxious to be honest. I was excited in some ways, but I've not always loved everything of his that I've read and it had the potential to damage one of my favourite shows. I won't rave about "The Doctor's Wife", but I did enjoy it and it was certainly an interesting take on how the Doctor feels about the TARDIS.
When they were whispering about what he calls her ("Sexy") and he said "That's just when we're alone", well, it does make one wonder what else happens when they are alone. Does he stroke her console? Tweak her... well, something that could compare to nipples? Are there any holes that he fills for her? Yeah, it makes me wonder what goes through Neil's mind too!

Anyone else got any Dr Who love that they'd like to share?

If there's one thing to say, I must say that Michael Sheen was an excellent choice for the voice of House. I just love listening to House's lines! :D

course i love it. even Matt Smith's grown on me in the character, which i wasn't expecting after DT departed. loved Chris Ecclestone in the role - he brought it crashing into the twentyfirst century along with the writing of Russel T Davis.

Yes, Neil Gaiman ... appreciate him as a writer, and he brought out some aspects that were ... different ... but i didn't like it overmuch. embodying the tardis was always going to be a tricky development, but after seeing Rose being filled with some of 'it/her' we were left with a sense of the tardis being something altogether more ethereal/big/amazing... i don't know. more. i think what they did this time around made it less incredible an entity for me, even while i still smiled and a tear came to my eye with the programme. perhaps it'll grow on me with watching the repeats. i think that i was left with the overall impression of 'just because you can, doesn't mean you should'.

Holy CRAP, that was Michael Sheen?!?!? Wow! Geez, I didn't notice!

Cor, between Tron Legacy and Doctor Who, that guy's life must be one long geekgasm right now!

You know what, I see your point. Humanising something can make it seem less... wondrous. Sometimes it's nice to know it's not all about us.

I'm suddenly thinking of a Cory Doctorow short story I listened to recently; "Shannon's Law". It's about a guy who runs an ISP on the edge of the realms of Fae; he's trying to establish a communications link across the Border, but is stymied by the fact that Things Work Differently on the Other Side; even people. Give it a read; Doctorow makes it make sense.

Maybe all we saw in that ep was the Tardis squashed down to work as a human, and that the freed soul is still as ineffable as always?

thanks for the link - i've bookmarked it for when i've time to read.

yeah, i get the 'squashed' thingy, but it simply didn't gel for me. i'm not even sure quite why... script? acting? a combination of both or neither? i can't put my finger on it. perhaps it's just me and a clash with my preconceptions.

When Rose "hosted" the T.A.R.D.I.S. she was a human being overwhelmed by something beyond her. For comic book fans think Jean Grey hosting the Phoenix as a analogy. In "The Doctors Wife", the T.A.R.D.I.S. wasn't overwhelmed because she/it was use to being that. It just had to adapt to being constrained by linear time.

The Doctor himself would also be a good analogy. He appears and interacts well with humans, but he's a Time Lord, with abilities and senses beyond us. I remember in one episode he talked about feeling the rotation of the planet he was on. That's an awareness beyond our comprehension, but perfectly normal for him.

I loved "The Doctor's Wife". For a brief moment the heart of the TA.R.D.I.S got to show it actually has a heart. And like a man dreaming it was a butterfly or vice versa, it got to experience things a little differently, see things differently, and consequently be a bit different.

the thing is, spidey, i agree with you 100% as to how that is what i was supposed to feel, how i should have experienced it, how i wanted to feel it. i just didn't. it fell short for me. as i said, it's most likely my own failing rather than the programme's.

One of those little things that your brain picks up on, but you don't, eh? ;)
Tis the way of life :p

I've had that happen many times with things. To quote the Talmud: "We see the world, not the way it is, but the way we are." It's not a failing, it's a viewpoint, and we all have them.

I have a crush on Rory

for me, he's the conscience of the trio

the Doctor does it because he's the Doctor and its what he does

Amy is running around having fun and adventures with her best friend

Rory sticks around because he loves Amy, and is willing to do anything for her.. he waited 2 thousand years for her, risking life and limb just to sit beside her frozen in a box

and I know you're a week behind, but I like how he actually defied Amy and the Doctor to do what he thought was right in this most recent episode ( the one you havent seen yet)

I'm getting a Rory crush for the same reason as BBS. He has a boy next door quality. He shows his devotion with his actions and not just words. I did enjoy how he did the right thing in the last epi (no spoilers), his character is a true heart.

Thanks for not giving too many spoilers on the next episode, guys. If things can stay like this for the rest of the thread, I'll be a happy gal. Somehow I wonder if that will happen though...

Oh and Michael Sheen was the voice of 'House'? Damn. Now, that man just keeps on doing things that interest me.

I really liked the fun, flirty sort of vibe between Amy and the Doctor, and when Rory was introduced I just saw him as nothing more than an impediment to that. Then he spent 2,000 years guarding Amy in that box and he just blew me away. He is quickly becoming my favorite character because of his character and how he expresses it. He's given the show a soul.

They really do give him the good stuff under the radar, don't they? I honestly thought that putting a married couple in the TARDIS was a freaking awesome idea and I'm glad it's paying off!

Oh, and now you've got me REALLY keen to see the next one! You lucky British / American types, you... :D

Loving the series, and how each Doctor brings their own idiosynchrasies (sp? lol) - their own interpretation of scatterbrain. For me though the 'Dr Who Confidential' segments at the end are a bit of a letdown - destroying a lot of the magic of the sets and the scenes, without much insight into the characters. Sure its nice to see the actors fluffing the odd line and mucking around, but this series the Confidentials are much more 'fluffy' and unsatisfying than the last series.
AS for the 'Doctors Wife' ep - I kept wondering when River Song was going to turn up and counter 'Sexy' with 'Sweety'. In hindsight a different title might have been in order.

Still creeped out by the angry red devil virtual nurse in the previous ep

For me the title was perfect, I know people expected to see River Song but thats just us viewers jumping to conclusions, maybe with a little bit of help from the writer, the show would be boring if we could work out what was coming before it happened.

With you on the fluff aspect, Masseur. If there's one thing that annoyed me about the first couple of Confidential eps, it's the fact tht they never sat down with Mark A. Sheppard, who's been in everything from The X-Files to Firefly to Battlestar Galactica about his role as Canton Delaware.

I don't even think they mentioned that the guy who plays the older version of Canton in the first ep is his dad, W. Morgan Sheppard.

Why, yes, I'm a nerd. How did you guess? :D

Actually they did mention that, it might have even been Mark Sheppard that mentioned it.

Last night was "The Rebel Flesh" for us Aussies. Spider, Babysitter, Philosophy, you were so right; Rory got some awesome time in the spotlight that episode and I can't wait to see how it works out.

I know it's not the way it'll happen, but did you have the feeling when you saw the Doctorganger that the two of them will be so busy next episode complimenting each other on how brilliant they are that it'll be down to Amy and Rory to save the day?

Oh, and has anyone else seen the original Life on Mars and its sequel, Ashes to Ashes? I kept looking at Buzzer and thinking, "Where do I know him from?" until the penny dropped. That's at least two actors from that show who've done a stint on Doctor Who now! Who's next: Phillip Glenister?

I freaking missed it today.. will have to wait for a repeat on Monday..so am a couple days behind
