Karen eyed the house from the cab with some trepidation. She hadn't seen her uncle since she was a small girl, and to be coming here to live with him, even if just for the summer while she attended classes at the local college, filled her with a sense of unease. She remembered him as being quite friendly, and enjoying his company as a small girl, but she wondered if he had changed any, or if they would get along now that she was older. He had offered her a free place to stay so that she wouldn't have to pay the extra costs of living on campus, and if they got along well enough, it could possibly turn into a more permanent arrangement if she decided to continue her education at this college. So for her, a lot seemed to be riding on this visit.
She stepped lithely out of the cab, handing the driver his fare before grabbing her purse from the seat and tugging her over-sized suitcase out behind her. She wondered again why her uncle hadn't been able to meet her at the airport, and shrugged it off. "He probably had to work or something," she thought to herself as she slowly made her way to the front door. At least he was supposed to be home when she arrived.
She set the heavy bag down on the step and pushed her long dark chestnut hair out of her face. Her bright green eyes scanned the windows of the house for any signs of life. Not seeing any, she frowned and looked again at the piece of paper in her hand, verifying that she did indeed have the right address. She turned, watching as the cab pulled back into the street and raced off. A soft sigh escaped her pink tinged lips, her hand reaching out to ring the bell, fidgeting nervously as she waited for someone to answer.
