Most Common Fiction Writing Mistakes, #10

I pulled this up from the past, but I feel like commenting :D.

I know that many regular posters around these parts are writing professionals or have a lot of experience, and in this example, the reaction of "Duh!" from many people probably bare this experience level out. However, when I read the reactions, it feels like we're focused on what we expect to read in a novel as opposed to focusing on the possible difficulty in creating this. I can be very picky when reading tertiary material in a book, but as a writer (wannabe) this concept makes me very nervous. How do you know what's appropriate and what's not? Is it just gut instinct? That's all I have. Is it experience that teaches the boundaries of excess outside information in a story?

Thanks, McKenna. And, phew! Wiping the sweat on my brow from trying to keep up!

(Oh, and I agree. There's a lot of stuff out there that is startling in it's lack of quality! It's probably why mom, junk reader extraordinaire, thinks I should be published! "You're stuff's better 'n theirs!" -- Mama Driphoney, 2009. The same can be said about other artistic venues. Every man I know sings better than Kris Kristofferson.)

my daddy dearest says that too! ;) Actually if you can write anything coherant you can probably write better then some published authers. I read somewhere on here...not sure where...that the difference between published and unpublished is persistance. If you are ready to put in the time and do the best you can as an artist then the rules (other then the very basics of grammer and spelling) mean no more then as they apply to you personally. Make new rules, the greatest do. I love the metaphor of sifting for gold. You'll find something pretty amongst the pebbles.

Hmmmm :(

I somehow thing this entire series is a response to McKenna reading one of my stories

Awww! :rose: It's not, I promise.

To clarify, these tips are not mine, but rather from a book I read. If you scan back to Most Common Fiction Writing Mistakes, #1, you'll find the author's information. I'm just sharing the information here for discussion purposes. :)

You know I break all the rules, McKenna. Good to see you are still around. I've been looking for Cloudy so we could have a BITCH REUNION. :D

HAHAHAHAH! Not sure she comes around anymore? I'm only here hit and miss, though lately it's been more hit than miss. Good to see you, too. :)

Cloudy left us. She apparently no longer felt a connection with the greater Lit community, and felt it was time to move on, and now there aren't enough boobs on the boards anymore :(

That's sad. Cloudy and I had our battles but we were friends. And she truely gave good advice to the new writers. :(

CLOUDY ran out of bullshit, excuses, bad ideas, and friends.

JBJ, say what you want about Cloudy, but she was MY friend. You, on the other hand, stick around without any.

JJ

Whats the downside to that? Your comment reminds me of the joke about the bum who happens upon a rotted chicken and eats it cuz he cant do any better.

i didn't realize how much this place has changed. God there are alot of people who no longer tread the threads here. I miss alot of them. Good to see you back Jenny.

....I must add to the emergency supply of boobs. I can't help in the cock department though.

I liked when you brought up Kenna's 2005 threads better when you had something to say about them in 2009.
