Discrimination and disenfranchisement takes place between many different ethnicities, clans and tribes (slavery can happen to white people too, for example historically there was the Moorish kidnappings of the Cornish, but also more recent cases of sex trafficking.) Discriminating against groups allows you to disenfranchise them, which allows you to also artificially deflate the economic value of their labour; this is of obvious benefit to the unscrupulous businessman/government.

Under normal circumstances I would say that the dominant group in a country is the most discriminatory. However, here in the land of unreconstructed bigots, all the studies carried out by the local universities have shown that the catholic/nationalist community is most sectarian. Interestingly, the researchers have been from the catholic/nationalist community. Additionally shortly after the release of the latest study that again confirmed this, the President of the Irish Republic, (who happens to be a Northern Irish catholic), accused the Northern Irish protestants of being Nazis. At partition (1922) the population of the Irish Free State, as it then was, comprised around 90% catholic and 10% protestant, Northern Ireland was approximately 75% protestant and 25% catholic. By 1969 when the Troubles started the Irish Republic was roughly 98% catholic and 2% protestant, Northern Ireland was about 66.66% protestant and 33.33% catholic. One thing I have learned however, is that some people cannot be reasoned with. This means that any empirical evidence is only of use where people are prepared to change their minds. Make of this what you will.

The slaver raids to which you refer were not confined to the Cornish. The population of entire Irish villages were siezed, as were peoples from the coasts of Europe. Nor was it only the Moors but also other groups from the coast of Africa. To complicate matters, some of the white slaves then became slavers, siezing further europeans, as did their progeny. Black slaves transported to the Americas, did the same, becoming slavers who shipped people from Africa to Europe and the Americas.

I forgot this one. It's a beaut. St Patrick was a Welshman, siezed by Irish pirates, and enslaved as a swineherd. So the best known slave in the world is a white man.
 
The word 'slavery', in modern day america, almost always conjures white men suppressing black men and women. And because of this, modern white men must pay the price. Regardless of the fact that we had anything to do with this or even if our ancestors did.

Having grown up in one of the few cities in America that is predominantly black (African-American if you're a pansy), I have a unique view on life that most others can not understand. I have not yet voted on this poll and wish someone during my daytime could bump it and keep it bumped. So that over time, despite alts etc, we can all see an honest truthful opinion of the people of the planet Earth.

If you read my post, I mentioned my own race (white) as indentured servants.

<sigh>...

As for the Irish, discriminated? Yes. Not as enslaved as other races (never understood irish discrimination anyway, guess everyone was afraid of a different culture back then)

I grew up in Brooklyn, surrounded by quite a few real thugs, and I still make it my business to avoid anyone, regardless of color, who´s wearing "ghetto gear".

was originally blacks BUT I changed it. Why? WEll, I have received equal amounts of racist comments from black and whites. It bothers me much more when it comes from black people but in truth, IMO they run about neck and neck.

Funnily enough, the black people I have dealt with on that particulr level all consider me *ofay* because I am bi-racial. If white people didn't like me it was because I was a *nigger* or a *zebra*. If black people didn't/don't like me it's because of my mother or my hair or 20 billion other things (including but not limited to the color of men/women that I date.)

So yea it's neck in neck for me...but racism from black people bothers me much worse.

I´ve never heard a black person mention the word "ofay". Then again, I´ve spent most of my life surrounded by West Indians. Is it an African-American thing?

Actually I think it's just a term from my area...(West Virginia, and western MD)...I have never heard the term any where else.
