CASINO ROYALE by Ian Fleming 1953

CR is Flemings first book, and introduces 007 James Bond to the world. The story is about Bond's efforts to bankrupt a Soviet official who stole a fortune from the government, to gamble with, and make himself a fortune before anyone is wise to him. Bond's job is to send him home penniless.

The first 50 pages are a long boring trek of dull writing until things explode into excitement that lasts almost to the end, when Bond falls in love with a female agent named Vesper. Bond then prances about with wings on his feet to THE END. The end, of course, is a shock for Bond and the reader.

The plot has a few blemishes, but overall is good quality. Fleming was a spy before he took up writing, so the plot is plausible, and never seems fantastical.

'Kelvin' (or Kevin) McClory was my dad's first cousin, and my uncle (head of Shell Far East at the time) part-financed Thunderball.

Just thought you would like to know that... : )

I have a grand father who retired from Shell Far East, I think he said he worked in Iraq; he was from Sheffield back in England.

Crap... I thought this was going to be similar to Scourie's World. JBJ deceives again!

Its the nice people who keep crashing the party. You folks need a thread where you can share Smores and praise half-wit semi-literate noobs.

Somewhere out there in Cyberspace is a dormant blog I created, its called SMARTIANS VS MORONIANS. I may resurrect it as a base of operations for trolls.

We already have that. It's called the playground. It even has its own troll. Remember the one who spammed every forum and then was outed in the GB?

Never been to the Play Ground, I'd rather be pushed thru a blender.

The gb is no better than the playground. Only difference is they feel more entitled because the owner of the site hangs around there all the time.

Bit of trivia:

It is widely believed Ian Fleming spent part of the war in Canada, at a British "spy training" camp known only as "Camp X". It is believed that what he saw and learned at Camp X is what he based some of his James Bond character on, as well as on the Camp's Commander, Sir William Stephenson.

Sadly, the camp was demolished, and is now just a small park near the lake. When the buildings were demolished, the rubble and bricks were dumped in the lake. If you walk the shoreline now, you can find pieces of the brick that have been washed up and worn smooth. I don't think they were ever completely able to remove the Hydra bunker, so that was just buried under a big pile of earth.

Based on the one novel I read they were clever devils.

Jesus H! James... I just realised my uncle's surname was 'Johnson...!' Far out! This is not looking good. : )

Fuggin Mexicans!

So I'm installing a new garage service door today. A Mexican installed the hinges. How do I know? The middle and bottom hinge screws are perfect and flush, the top hinge screws are at wild and crazy angles...he was too short for the job.

What a coincidence. I worked in Shell House in Bangkok once . . . and I've been to England.

In less sad news, we still have Camp Perry near Williamsburg.

To me Bond is like Superman.

Good original concept, but the same old same old and nothing resembling realism. Like the Austin Powers bit goes, why don't you just walk up and shoot him in the head?

Then again Bond could probably dodge a bullet from three feet away.

Boring as hell.

None of that in Casino Royale. He hadda little good luck at times but had his balls smacked for an hour. Now, where I come from the thought of such a thing would put me in a coma.

The first is a far cry from what he morphed into which was a pretty much a superhero in a suit.
