So...

My laptop of 9 years finally gave up the ghost. First it was the WIFI, then the Sound Card and finally the Disk/Video controller. And that was that for my Gateway/Acer. Nine years isn't bad for a laptop. I have had HP's kick after two years. Nice metal case, heavy ass, HP laptops. Of course those belonged to my employers. They weren't really mine.

Anyway...

I ordered a new Acer laptop from Walmart on Black Friday. Good laptop for the price. It got here yesterday, well not here, but my local Walmart. They actually use FedEx to ship it from their warehouse in DFW to Houston. One day delivery and that's free. One day delivery to my place would be another $15.

So all day yesterday and today I spend getting it in shape. It came with Windows 10. At first it didn't seem so bad. Man was I mistaken. There are still so many bugs and fuck ups in the damn system it's almost useless.

You can't even get Windows Explorer, now renamed Windows File Explorer, to work the same as it does in all ( I don't know about Win8 ) previous versions of Windows. Even though all the same checkboxes are checked. I doesn't stop you from using the POS, it's just aggravating.

What does stop you is having to select the same program to run twice. The first time you chose it, it looks like its going to run, but poof, it disappears. You have to open File Explorer again and click on the thing you want a second time. Then it runs.

I am beside myself...oh there I am over there...with my hatred of Microsoft for fucking up there Operating System of the Century, Windows 7.

I have found more bugs in Win10 than I found in Win 3.1 way back when.

Now some of you are going to say...Virus...except the laptop wasn't hooked up to the network until this afternoon. And my virus software didn't find any, nor my malware software.

Windows 10 is just so fucked up. If I could afford it right now I would wipe the harddrive and purchase a Win7 license. Maybe next month.

It can take a good while for Win 10 to settle down; you'll need to connecting up, because the updates' are H U G E .
I suggest that you fit yourself up with the Anti-virus programme of choice, turn the machine on and leave it on all night.
Good Luck

Yes, I know, it just finished its first update...that started at noon today, it's now 4:43pm. Since when does an update take almost 5 hours? The first Win7 update only took an hour for 52 items. WTF?

And most of the time was taken up in the reboot...3 hours of rebooting.

You don't really expect uSoft to get it right first time, do you ?

You could always put Linux on it. Ubuntu comes with LibreOffice and ThunderBird for mail. It's all free, like stories on Literotica.

Good Luck

It's been downhill since Windows 98SE with a Mozilla Firefox IE.

Last i checked, Microshaft bought up all surplus copies of Win 7 when 8 came out. There aren't any Win 7 licenses available unless you buy an older computer from a private party.

An article I read the other day stated that there were tens of millions of bootleg copies of Win 7 in use since 8 and 10 came out.

Handley is right. It can take quite a while for all of the Windoze updates to download a run. I upgraded my dad's machine (because he swore he had to have it), and it took a good two months for the systems crap to settle out.

MindsMirror's suggestion of loading Linux isn't for the faint of heart. Even after all these years, Linux variants are still struggling to keep up with all of the different hardware and devices on newer laptops.

You can still launch the old Internet Exploder and use it, but it isn't very convenient.

My advice is to download Mozilla Firefox and just quit using all of the crappy ass Miscrosquishy browser junk.

Also, it takes a while for the Microjunk Office crap to settle out with updates too.

I've heard some people are having success with Win 10 by upgrading to Win 10 Pro.

Well then what is Amazon doing? Although it's sold by a third party, it's still out there.

Wasn't talking about Internet Explorer, I was talking about Windows Explorer.

I have Pale Moon and FireFox and Chrome...I wouldn't use IE to save my life.

Yes.

Microsoft philosophy...to fill all available space in memory and on the hard disk as slowly as possible.

Windows software instead of getting faster, get slower with each release.

There was an old joke...as processor speed increased, Microsoft add more digits to all the for next loops in it startup processes. They must be way over a trillion iterations by now.

Yeah, I kind of missed that you were talking about Windows Explorer, not IE. I agree, that new Edge based thingy sucks extra hard.

My HP laptop came with Win10 and let it have a whopping two boot cycles before I installed Ubuntu. I was even going to try and dual boot it just in case I had to return it for repairs or something, but there's no recovery partition, no (re)install media, and the serial number key is impossible to read (in the case under the battery?!?). F that. Ubuntu was running famously less than an hour later, and I've never looked back. It's so much more powerful than windows, and I don't have to worry about cortana's stupid ass, nor the intentional spyware that Redmond installs for me.

I'm in the tech industry, and I know one - ONE - person that actually uses Edge on purpose. It's horrid.

Why do most people fight so hard to make new technology work exactly like the old technology it replaces?

I have Win 10 on three desktops (two are 8 year old Dell's) and two fairly new laptops that came with Win 10 installed. I do flight sim development in C++, CAD and 3D modeling apps so I'm not just fucking around with a browser reading Lit stories and watching porn. I don't have any problems that I can blame on the operating system other than my occasional ignorance of a feature now and again.

However, I do have one complaint about Win 10 on all those machines. Every time they update, they destroy most of my system settings and I have to go through and reestablish them. And that fucking bitch Cortina or Cortana or whatever. I disable her, and they bring her back new and improved in the next update. Now, it's near impossible to get rid of her. I gave up and just pretend she's my first wife.

Sounds like you should switch to Linux. Nobody who uses Linux complains about it. That's because they've bitched so much about every other OS, they've painted themselves in a corner where only Linux is left for them.

First thing I download once I hooked up to the Internet - Spybot Anti-Beacon. A nifty little program that shuts all that backtalk shit down. It keeps what I do private. Redmond doesn't even know I exist.

I also run it on my Win7 machine.

Actually the way windows file explorer works in 10 is the way it originally worked back in 3.1. So, I'm not trying to go backwards I'm trying to get it to work like it has in every other release. When I click on a file folder in the left-hand pane, I don't want a new window to open, I want the damn POS to list the file in the folder in the right-hand pane.

I heard that this problem was patented by Apple. . .

The thing that really p1$$es me off about Windoze is that Redmond seems to assume that ALL PCs are operating in an 'office' environment (including 'Home' versions, which seems a contradiction in terms).
"Consult your systems administrator": my WHAT ?
I AM my systems admin and I still don't get what the bloody thing needs (apart from a large hammer).

It all reminds me of the old joke: "Keyboard Error; press F1"

Well, I had to reset the damn thing last night. The problem with he file manage got so bad that it would open, then just close. No error, no message. And seeing as how you have to use file manager to get to the error logs...RESET.

I think I'm taking a day off from Windows 10. I tried Ubuntu. My desktop can run it fine. The laptop is so new that there are no drivers for the graphic card and such.

Well coffee's ready.

Zeb, I can't help but wonder if some of your troubles could be related to how Acer setup/installed Winblows. You're describing some problems I've not experienced on any of my Win10 machines, like file explorer opening a new window when you click in the left pane. I've not experienced that. Can you do a clean Win 10 install? Yes, that sets you back as far as updates, etc., but could give you a better experience.

I'm constantly moving to a new machine or upgrading an older one to newer operating systems. With at least eight Win10 machines, I've not experienced that issue. (Including an Acer desktop upgraded from Win 8 to Win 8.1 to Win 10.

I hated Win 8. First time I turned it on, I stared at the interface for 45 minutes, turned it off and went back to my Win 7 laptop with the failing screen. I didn't update my wife's laptop until Win10 had been out for a while. She's not tech savvy and went from Win 7 right to Win 10 without problems.

In general, Win 10 isn't too bad. My MSI gaming laptop came with a clean install and still required some massive updates that left me cussing, but otherwise, I'm happy enough to avoid Linux or Apple.

Zeb,

You have my sympathy. I had a similar problem with Windows 8, and within six hours of purchasing the laptop, I wiped Windows and installed Linux Mint, and I've been happy that I did.

I have desktop computer with Win 10 on it, and it took over 7 hours (twice) for it to do one of its upgrades, because it said the first one failed. MS has made it impossible to kill Cortana. It's my computer, so why can't I get it to do what I want? It's sad that a company which has been making operating systems for so many years can't get it right. They need to get the opinions of a large focus group to learn what people want instead of selling crap that they force down your throat.

If more users complained to manufacturers about selling their computers with Windows pre-installed, maybe they could put enough pressure against MS to improve their operating systems. Competition is one of the best ways to get a manufacturer to improve a product.

Good luck with Win 10. :)

Last night I did a complete reset. I don't have a disk, just the restore partition. I have yet to allow it to update. I think that's where the problem came from. File manager was working fine this morning. So, when and if I get around to finishing setting it up, I will do it all before I allow the updates.

If the problem comes back, a call to microsoft will be in order just to rant at their support people for ducking up my machine with their inept updates.

I'd like 20 year old women to look at me the way they did 50 years ago too.

And Win 10 works for me. We're probably both dreaming.

rj

And me. With all of it's very real annoyances, it is light-years better than Windows 8. Remember that nightmare?

If I was rich, I'd be an i-guy. Apple's stuff just works better and smoother most of the time. But man, you pay through the teeth. And I'm not rich.

If I was more diligent and dedicated, I'd run Linux (probably Mint 18, "Sarah") but running Linux on a laptop takes time and effort and headaches. Linux is the best idea, but it takes work and a lot of trial and error. And I've got more important ways to spend my time.

For all us poor and lazy folk, we have Microsoft 10. It's like public transit or Obama Care. It kinda sucks, but it's better than the alternative.

A few things I've learned about Win 10 this year:

1) Let it do it's updates. There's no way around this on Win 10. This is also the single most important thing you can do to stay un-hacked. But you can tell your machine WHEN to update. Microsoft usually releases updates on Tuesdays, so I have mine do it's updates every Wednesday morning at 3 am. Relatively simple and painless.

2) Use backup prophylactics! 2 rubbers are best. If you have money, McAfee or Kaspersky, for us unwashed masses yearning to be free, Avira is the best I've found, Avast and AVG have good reps as well. Also Malwarebytes and Glary Utilities, neither one is strictly A/V, but I have sworn by both of them for years.

3) Don't worry be happy! Dealing with a crappy OS is a "cake" issue. Like bitching about your landlord or boss, lot's of people would love to have that problem.
Peace,
R
