Ok, so we've got a mother-son thread going, but what about daddies and their little princesses? What are the best father-daughter stories?

Are you actually going to review a Lit story this time?

Well, you started a thread in Story Discussion Circle... Should you begin the "book club"?

I'm not that au fait with the correct etiquette as to where topics should be posted. There is a (rather popular) thread about mother-son stories that resides here. I assumed a thread about daddy-daughter sex would fit in quite neatly here too...

Perhaps a moderator could move the thread to a different section, if this is not the correct place for it?

The OP could, I think, be pardoned for being somewhat confused on this point -- I am as well -- because a quick scan of the 20 threads immediately preceding this one on this forum indicates that a number of them also are not about specific stories but about story types. If the guidelines preclude this type of thread then they preclude those threads as well. It would seem the rule, such as it is, is not enforced.

If this isn't the right forum, then what is? This forum strikes me as the best fit for what the OP wants to talk about.

I think that may be why the mod to this board has been closing the "off topic" threads lately.

That doesn't answer the question: where should threads like these go? It seems capricious to me to close down a thread without indicating where it should go. This is a better fit than the Author's Hangout, or the General Board. This thread may not fit the precise guidelines laid out in the link you gave but it does fit within spirit of them -- it's a thread to invite discussion of published stories.

Most likely, I would say the "Looking for a story?" board would be best. The OP essentially is asking for recommendations on specific stories.

Ink, Sex, Magic

I wrote a five part Daddy/daughter series that has sex and an intricate fantasy plot. I'd appreciate any feedback, as I'm trying to turn the core of the story (a combination of Ink Magic and Celtic magical realism) into a non-incest novel and any input would be appreciated.

I am an incest aficionado (in an abstract, imaginary way), so as far as I'm concerned all stories should be just riddled with family fucking, so I wonder why you want to strip it out of your (so far, very enjoyable) story? Is it just too extreme for a more mainstream audience?

Thanks so much for looking at my story!
I'd like to make it commercially viable, if at all possible, by plucking out the heart of the story, characters, world, etc. Revamp things so it's less a father/daughter romance and more fantasy with a side of 'traditional' romance, if that makes since. But I'm still trying to figure out the logistics.

Most successful writers I enjoy agree on this point and I thought I'd pass it along for you to consider: consciously trying to make a story more commercially viable is a bad idea.

Aim instead at making it more true to you, even if you think it will hurt its chances to sell. Paradoxically, that makes it more likely to sell. David Milch calls this "writing out of faith as opposed to fear."

I just wonder, in an age where Fifty Shades of Grey has been such a mainstream success, and the general public are perhaps more accepting of things which are a little more unusual, a story that contains an intense, forbidden father-daughter affair might be quite successful?

That's something I hadn't considered. I have a less explicit style of describing sex which is still true to me, so perhaps that should be my focus. Polish it, expand on certain elements. Make it more instead of less?

I have read some mainstream books that involve incest, so you're right. If I made certain parts more tender and less incest pornie it could be more accessible because I do take an intimate approach overall. Thanks for your input.

That's an idea well worth considering, Alice. Your intimate writing is very good because, well, it's intimate, and you have a gentle voice. If you purged the explicitness from your Ink story too much, you'd run the risk of losing its heart.

Another alternative might be to lose the explicit father/daughter relationship completely, so it becomes older man/younger woman and therefore closer to straight romance. But it would still tap the "daddy thing" which, as several women have explained to me, is actually a quite widespread fantasy/security place, but doesn't need to be overt incest to hit the hot buttons. It's the subtlety of the fine line.

Thank you, electricblue. I know my style isn't for everyone, but I try to show emotions and actions with equal depth.
I think I'm getting too married to some of my concepts being incest dependent- the deal with Carman being made before her birth, her conflict with her mother over making the same love triangle she did, incest baby (don't know how else to put that one). I'm going to try murdering some darlings and see where that takes me.

From an entirely selfish perspective, I would consider it a shame if you dropped all the incest stuff, but it is of course entirely your decision.

I think GoT has really opened the door to anything being possible. If you want commercial success, you have the right idea, though. The story/plot/charcters sbould come first and you can steer readers into the taboo romantic plots.

If I didn't challenge myself not to, all of my erotic stories would be incest to tell you the truth. I sprinkle some into my non-erotic stories, but as it is in the case of Jaime and Cersei, most characters (in mainstream lit) who commit incest are villains (well, Jaime changes so that's debatable, but you get what I mean), or it's abusive. I read one for young adults actually called Forbidden, but the sex was very minimal. And even when I'm at my least explicit/most romantic, my sex is usually maximal ;-)
