Esquire peers at McNaughton's lithograph
August 2, 2018
McNaughton painting is not particularly useful as a reflection of reality, at least as most would recognize it. Instead, it's a momentary glimpse through the kaleidoscopic lens that Fox News conservatives now see the world. The president is not just Good, but a Great Man of History on the level of the Founding Fathers.
(Emperor Carrot's) Patriot Boat also features some of his prominent aides and cabinet members—but conveniently leaves out all the ones who have resigned in disgrace, or even those who've stuck around in it.
There's no place for former Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price
There's no Scott Pruitt, either.
It appears there isn't even space for Ryan Zinke
Wilbur Ross did make it in the front (Did McNaughton lie about who was seated in the boat ? Jeff Sessions is listed, but the seated figure could represent either man. The brimmed hunting hat hides distinctive features. Grumpy Old Keebler Elf could portray either man.)

Esquire provides an introduction to McNaughton's previous creations.
"The artist's previous offering was a bizarre spasm of the persecution complex plaguing the right, where The Secular Left is forcing Christianity out of American life"
"Other recent McNaughton works show Trump menacing Special Counsel Robert Mueller with a magnifying glass, or Trump hugging an American flag standing on a football field in a work titled, "Respect the Flag." There's even an ode to Cliven Bundy, the freeloading anti-government rancher with some interesting views on race. In this respect, the paintings are often boilerplate resentment topics pulled from Fox or talk radio, with a point of view delivered with the subtlety you expect from a Ben Garrison cartoon."

Art from The Other Side of Alice in Wonderland's Looking Glass?
Jesus the Christ is the size of a demi-god. Everyone present, is dwarfed by his height, weight, muscles. He could crush anyone's whole face, with one of his huge hands.

As everyone dissects Jon McNaughton's "Trump Goes Fishin'" painting, let me point you to his masterpiece, "One Nation Under God."
And yes, I had to be talked out of discussing this at length in the epilogue of my last book.

"One Nation Under God," references the line from the Pledge of Allegiance that is held up as deeply symbolic of intrinsic American religiosity—and which was added in 1953."
