How do you break out of a groove?

So, after reeling off a bunch of lesbian stories, I finally get the impetus to return to one of my old haunts - Incest. The problem - I can't seem to get the juices flowing.

Has anyone else experienced this? Writing in one category/one type of story for an extended period of time and it's tougher to get words together for something else?

I always read stories in the genre I'm moving back into to go back to that way of thinking. Good stories, bad stories, old favorites and new stuff - I find the variety is what gives me ideas.

Thank God there's something in your sig line to help me there.

Do a mother/daughter incest story. You've been writing lesbian and that will have lesbian sex and ease you back into the incest mode.

Nah, my heart's pretty much set on brother-sister. I even have a story idea and all the points I want to hit. Maybe I can keep it short (3 pages) and see how it goes.

I went through something similar a few months back. I did five straight Milf stories(went to writing about another person's mother:D)

Adn like you, I wasn't quite feeling it when I went to try to write a mother/son story. I went back and read a couple of my old ones and that seemed to help me get back in the flow. Reading other people's didn't seem to work, but mine did, I guess the muse had to pick her scent back up

There's something about a well-written Incest story that has a charm of it's own. Not like some of the "sex in a moment" kind, but when the reader gets to know the characters outside their size and stamina.

I edited one such story by CPBaudelaire recently (Mom/son). I'm not entirely sure when it will be submitted, but it has all the makings of a Hall of Fame fixture.

Yeah if you can wade through all the "Mom/sis/daughter/dad are hot, so why not" stories you can find some gems.

CP's first story was epic, very well done. The number one of all time "Threads" eluded me, it did nothing for me, but taste is subjective.

I enjoy bro/sis and I think that is why I don't write much of it because its my own guilty pleasure. Although "Porn shoot with my sister" came out pretty good despite the corny title.

over two years later I am still getting SWB sequel requests, but feel that tale is told.

Do some more of Black Sheep! I was enjoying that one so much.

I started writing my werewolf series again after a long break recently and it was difficult to get into the writing. Now I've taken the plunge it's all flowing along again nicely. Get the fingers on the keyboard and write. :)

Breaking out of a groove: Electroconvulsive therapy always works for me.

If the ECT doesn't suffice, I may try:

* Directed dreaming. Crawl into bed with an idee fixe firmly planted, on the theme about which I wish to dream.

* Take a walk/ride/drive, alone: I let the rhythm of movement stir ideas. I may dictate them to tape or DAR so as not to lose them.

* I immerse myself in something totally different and overwhelming, then come back to writing fresh, with my mind wiped clean.

* Obligate myself to write the difficult piece, then scramble to make the deadline. A ticking clock is a great motivator.

I tried a chisel once but ended up incorporating it in the story.

I try to keep out of ruts by having several stories going at once in different categories.

I can't work kink-centric. The overall plot comes first, then I slot in what sex is needed in the story (if anything is needed at all).

If I end up stuck in a certain groove, I found doing a contest story helps wonders. They help me think outside of my normal comfort zones. Both the Tag Team contest recently and FAWC 5 have been very inspring.

Read Jon Franklin's WRITING FOR STORY. He got 2 Pulitzers for his efforts.

Here is something you might try...

Try jumping up a couple of levels in the process.

Outline (or graph) the story with a beginning a middle and an end. Include the characters, but don't develop them. Include the action/flow, but only at a high level.

When I do that it tends to "load" the story into my head. Then I can start writing.

This is pretty much how I do it, too. Although at times, the flavor of one story can bleed over into another. Not really a good thing when one story I'm writing is a high-adventure fantasy and the other is a gritty dark piece. I've had to rewrite more than a few paragraphs here and there to keep the stories consistent.

I do that more linearly. I rarely have two stories going at once. But each time I start a story it's with the thought of what different story I can write this time.

Translation: He changes the names of his characters.

You seem a little bitter and upset, Jim. People not giving you enough attention? ;)
