Rack: Women Write about Their Breasts

The following call is from Abby Schwartz. Please note that this venture pays only in contributor copies, and does not yet have a publisher. You might want to state a release date if your essay is accepted, just in case. In other words, if your essay is accepted but a publisher is not secured in 8 months (or whatever time frame you're comfortable with) after the deadline, you're work is released back to you for submission elsewhere.

Rack: Women Write about Their Breasts

From Venus de Milo's chiseled cleavage to Janet Jackson's notorious SuperBowl wardrobe malfunction, women's breasts have long served as catalysts for cultural criticism, wonder, and infatuation. In a nation where a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer every three minutes and teenage girls receive breast augmentations as graduation gifts from their parents, it is impossible not to wonder: How do women truly feel about their breasts? "Rack: Women Write about Their Breasts" will aim to explore this question by going right to the source and sharing the stories of women who have had extraordinary and ordinary experiences with their bust-lines.

In order to complete this unique anthology, the editor is seeking well-crafted personal essays on a wide range of breast-related experiences and issues. Each unique non-fiction piece in this anthology should shed its own light on the moving, confusing, and often hilarious experience of having breasts; diverse and unique perspectives are encouraged. Submissions should be strong, developed, first-person accounts that don't tell your breasts' entire life story, but instead highlight a specific moment, experience, or process that made a significant impact on your life. Thematically, essays should address the question: In a world of plastic surgery, piercing, and porn stars, how do we, as women, learn to love, lose, and eventually accept our breasts?

Some likely topics include:

- Getting nipples pierced/other breast-related body modification
- Accounts of breast implants (I love them, I hate them, implant-related illnesses, etc.)
- Experiences of modern-day moms (pumping,breast-feeding, what your mother never told you but you were forced to learn on your own)
- Experiences with mastectomy
- Growing up flat-chested, with uneven breasts, or with weird nipples
- Binding breasts for gender purposes
- Transitioning from a breast-friendly culture to American culture
- Breasts and sex work
- Shopping for a first bra

Editor: Abby Schwartz lives in San Diego, where she is a regular columnist for the Gay & Lesbian Times and the host of Siren Open Mic for Women, a popular monthly performance series. She comes from a long line of busty Jewish women, and proudly sports a 36-D.

Three buck chuck

The Deconstruction Quarterly, Second Edition, seeks erotic poetry.

Much like the first edition, the second Deconstruction Quarterly will give those of you with new or interesting works a chance for publication. This edition, however, will contain only erotic poetry. There was a call heard, here, for a venue which will pay and publish in hard copy. Keep reading if you are still interested.

Type of work: Erotic poetry, preferably previously unpublished, prose poetry as well as all traditional forms, though I cringe at rhyming work unless it is done very well. I would like stuff that either totally ignites my senses or tells a passionate story. I will not accept smut or porno thinly disguised in verse. If you don't value erotica as art as well as entertainment, don't bother submitting.

Word count: All work should be under 2000 words, or three pages single spaced of verse.

Compensation: I now offer an honorarium of $3 per author, on publication, and one copy of the journal. Please keep in mind that if I use more than one poem of yours, I can still only pay you three dollars.

Multiple submissions: We will view up five poems.

Rights: We are offering one time, non-exclusive publication rights. I would appreciate work that has not been previously published. The work will appear in hard copy and as a .pdf, available for download for about 90 days after publication.

To submit: In the body of an email, write a brief bio (including name, mailing address and some publishing credits) and a brief synopsis of your piece(s). Attached them all in one .rtf file, with each piece clearly titled. Send to dpeditor@earthlink.net

When to submit: The deadline for this erotic poetry edition will be May 21.

SUBMISSIONS OPEN for the hurricane relief anthology. Details are posted at
http://www.celaine.com/katrina.html

We will be donating proceeds to relief efforts, and are also asking that
those who are able will:

a) make a donation to a relief effort charity (details on anthology page)

b) purchase one or more copies of the finished book (not required, but we'd
definitely appreciate that...and it is towards relief efforts)

c) help us promote the book by linking it on web sites, etc.

LOOKING FOR TITLE SUGGESTIONS

I am looking for title suggestions for the Katrina Relief Anthology (which
may become a Katrina and Rita relief Anthology by the end of the weekend).

The one I had come up with so far is "Under a Creole Moon". While I like
that, I am not convinced we can't come up with something a little more
fitting, somehow.

Themes are on the anthology page www.celaine.com/katrina.html, but in brief
will include (but not be limited to):

* impressions/personal thoughts on the hurricane(s)
* poverty
* overcoming despair or adversity
* bad things happening to good people
* hope
* the affected region (New Orleans and the Mississippi Delta, etc. -
this may be expanded because of Rita)
* Deep south, memories, poignant vignettes, etc

The collection will be a mixture of the poignant/tragic with strong elements
of hope/promise. Thread for title suggestions is http://*******.com/c42oc
(links to a thread at This So Called Life).

Also, the WOMEN OF THE WEB anthology has been released, and is being
considered for adaptation as a college text for women's studies and creative
writing classes. Thank you to everyone who helped make this collection a
reality. Proceeds from that volume are being donated to a women's shelter in
the Grand Rapids, MI, area. Should sales become high enough to warrant it,
we'll add other shelters to that list, as well.

On a personal note, if anyone will be in the Kensington, Maryland area
tomorrow, you are invited to attend a poetry reading given by The Pedestal
Magazine's JOHN AMEN, local poets CHERYL SNELL and JEN GRESHAM, and myself.
We'd love to see you there.

To all those who have been affected by Katrina, and those who are in the
path of Rita...my heartfelt prayers and best wishes to all of you, your
family, friends and loved ones.

Best wishes,

Christine E. Laine

Mannequin Envy is seeking submissions of poetry and flash fiction for its Winter 2006 edition.

Have something that is sharp? Evocative? Innovative? Consider sending it our way. Check out the submission guidelines at the site

disclaimer: we read all work objectively, and have rejected work from family members, friends, big name poets with icky submissions, and editors of journals where I would love to have my work....and accepted work from unpublished writers, people who might seem a bit icky, and well you know, anyone who submits work that fits with our vision... just sayin' it is nothing personal ever. Evah.

We have had quite a few lit folks on the site and know this place grows some darn talented poets.

Thanks!
