"Burning Bright" ~ Shinedown

I feel like there is no need for conversation
Some questions are better left without a reason
And I would rather reveal myself than my situation
Now and then I consider, my hesitation

The more the light shines through me
I pretend to close my eyes
The more the dark consumes me
I pretend I'm burning, burning bright

I wonder if the things I did were just to be different
To spare myself of the constant shame of my existence
And I would surely redeem myself in my desperation
Here and now I'll express, my situation

The more the light shines through me
I pretend to close my eyes
The more the dark consumes me
I pretend I'm burning bright

There's nothing ever wrong but nothing's ever right
Such a cruel contradiction
I know I cross the lines, its not easy to define
I'm born to indecision
There's always something new, some path I'm supposed to choose
With no particular rhyme or reason

The more the light shines through me
I pretend to close my eyes
The more the dark consumes me
I pretend I'm burning

I feel like there is no need for conversation

I love this song, it's just been playing on the radio...

What You Waiting For? ~ Gwen Stefani

What an amazing time
What a family
How did the years go by
Now it's only me

Tick-tock, tick-tock
Tick-tock, tick-tock
Tick-tock, tick-tock
Tick-tock, tick-tock
La, la, la, la, la, la, la

Like a cat in heat, stuck in a moving car
A scary conversation, shut my eyes, can't find the brake
What if they say that you're a climber
Naturally, I'm worried if I do it alone
Who really cares, cause it's your life
You never know, it could be great
Take a chance cause you might grow
Oh, ah, oh

What you waiting
What you waiting
What you waiting
What you waiting
What you waiting for

What you waiting
What you waiting
What you waiting
What you waiting
What you waiting for

Tick-tock, tick-tock
Tick-tock, tick-tock
Take a chance you stupid ho

Like an echo pedal, you're repeating yourself
You know it all by heart
Why are you standing in one place
Born to blossom, bloom to perish
Your moment will run out
Cause of your sex chromosome
I know it's so messed up, how our society all thinks (for sure)
Life is short, you're capable (uh-huh)

Oh, ah, oh
Look at your watch now
You're still a super hot female
You got your million-dollar contract
And they're all waiting for your hot track

What you waiting
What you waiting
What you waiting
What you waiting
What you waiting for

What you waiting
What you waiting
What you waiting
What you waiting
What you waiting for

I can't wait to go back and do Japan
Get me lots of brand new fans
Osaka, Tokyo
You Harajuku girls
Damn, you've got some wicked style

Go

Look at your watch now
You're still a super hot female
You got your million dollar contract
And they're all waiting for your hot track

What you waiting
What you waiting
What you waiting
What you waiting
What you waiting for

What you waiting
What you waiting
What you waiting
What you waiting
What you waiting for

What you waiting for
What you waiting for

(What you waiting for)
Take a chance you stupid ho
Take a chance you stupid ho

What you waiting for
What you waiting for

(What you waiting for)
Take a chance you stupid ho
Take a chance you stupid ho

Here's one of my favorites, by the Canadian band Sons of Maxwell.

The Lighthouse

After midnight, there's a drizzle in the air,
And the streets are all but clear.
Listening to my shoes keep rhythm in the night,
On the corner you appear.

Yes, I am aware of what you sell,
But that's all right by me.
My heart's been aching, and I would gladly pay
For comfort and serenity.

And it may be wrong, but looking through the eyes
Of a man who's known more lows than highs
I'll take whatever love you have to share.
It sure beats loneliness. God, I hate it there.

In a place where the ocean seldom rests
There's a lighthouse near a cove
And it was thought to be a warning to all those
Who dared to sail too close

But I have come to understand it differently
To see the lighthouse as a friend
Who understands when you have journeyed all you can
And reaches out to you instead

And the light, like God, extends across the sea
Searching out lost souls like me.
And when the winds of change begin to blow
I´ll whisper you're my lighthouse, in case you didn't know.

Here's one that I've just found in my music collection - ironic considering I was introduced to this song by my former Lady. Almost every word of the lyrics resonate.

Stupid Kid - Alkaline Trio

There are things that used to make me smile
One of them was you for just a little while
You left me for dead so far away
I replaced you with fear and shame
You'll be happy on the day I die
There are things that used to make me laugh
But now they're deeply buried in the past
I left them there so far away
Replaced my humor with my pain
I'll be happy on the day it dies

I'm gonna keep posting this, every day until Christmas. While I don't think it's as good as the original (which sent shivers down my spine), it is a pretty cool re-make. It's out in the UK on Monday 29th November, go buy it!!!

The proceeds of 2004's version will be going to the Band Aid Trust, which is supporting food aid to the Sudan's troubled Darfur region. BBC News Link

Do they know it's Christmas? Band Aid 20

It's Christmastime,
there's no need to be afraid
At Christmastime,
we let in light and we banish shade
And in our world of plenty
we can spread a smile of joy
Throw your arms around the world
at Christmastime

But say a prayer,
pray for the other ones
At Christmastime it's hard,
but when you're having fun
There's a world outside your window,
and it's a world of dread and fear
Where the only water flowing
is the bitter sting of tears
And the Christmas bells that ring there
are the clanging chimes of doom
Well tonight thank God it's them
instead of you

And there won't be snow in Africa this Christmastime
The greatest gift they'll get this year is life(Oooh)
Where nothing ever grows
No rain or rivers flow
Do they know it's Christmastime at all?

Here's to you raise a glass for everyone
Here's to them underneath that burning sun
Do they know it's Christmastime at all?

Feed the world
Feed the world
Feed the world
Let them know it's Christmastime again

Feed the world
Let them know it's Christmastime again

I'm in such a funk today. Earlier I was crying about nothing in particular. Radiohead is the only thing I can listen to today.

Black Star

I get home from work and you're still standing in your dressing gown
Well what am I to do?
I know all the things around your head and what they do to you
What are we coming to?
What are we gonna do?

Blame it on the black star
Blame it on the falling sky
Blame it on the satellite that beams me home

The troubled words of a troubled mind I try to understand what is eating you
I try to stay awake but its 58 hours since that I last slept with you
What are we coming to?
I just don't know anymore

Blame it on the black star
Blame it on the falling sky
Blame it on the satellite that beams me home

I get on the train and I just stand about now that I don't think of you
I keep falling over I keep passing out when I see a face like you
What am I coming to?
I'm gonna melt down

Blame it on the black star
Blame it on the falling sky
Blame it on the satellite that beams me home
This is killing me
This is killing me

Back in black
I hate to say it
It's been too long I'm glad to be back
Yes I'm let loose
From the noose
That's kept me hangin' around
I've keep lookin' at the stars
'Cause they're gettin' me high
Forget the hearse 'cause I'll never die
I've got nine lives
Cats eyes
Usin' every one of them and runnin' wild

(Chorus)
'Cause I'm back
Yes,I'm back
Well,I'm back
Yes,I'm back
Well,I'm back,back
Well,I'm back in black
Yes,I'm back in black

Well I'm
back in the back of a Cadillac
Number one with a bullet
I'm a power pack
Yes,I'm in a bang
With the gang
They've got to catch me if they want me to hang
'Cause I'm back on the track
And I'm beatin' the flack
Nobody's gonna get me on another rap
So look at me now
I'm just makin' my play
Don't try to push your luck
Just get out of my way

Jump in the who ride, slide to the rhythm of
Snoop D.o. double G nigga from the dub
I represent it to the fullest everywhere I go
Guaranteed to bust a ho, yeah I'm so original

I like to lay low with my niggas blowin' endo
We like to drink, talk shit, and spit at bitches
And that's the way we do it, sometimes we hittin' switches
In the low-rider slidin' to the hood and back
It's snoop dogg in the motherfuckin' cadillac
They call it Snoop Deville for real
I get the money and I never ever pop no pills
I used to pop'em, I'm lyin' to these motherfuckers now
I used to do all kind of shit when I was wild
They used to call me Lil Bow Wow, now I’m Big Bow Wow
In this motherfucka bustin' a freestyle
Snoop Dogg is in the place to see
Do it with my nephew Freddy D.
Ooh wee, in the place to see
Snoop D.o. double G from the D.P.G.C.

Freak baby, freak freak baby
Tell me when you're ready to go
Tell me when you're ready to roll
Freak baby, freak freak baby
Tell me when you're ready to go
Tell me when you're ready to roll

Look who's, talkin' it up baby
One more, chalkin' it up baby
Star maps, stalkin' it up baby
My dogs, barkin' it up baby
Who'd a thought I'd be layin it down baby?
Who'd a thought I'd be turnin' your frown baby?
Never know about things these days baby
'til your cell phone rings and it's me baby

Ok, so I'm in a very nostalgic mood today. With the new Band Aid song coming out on Monday, I dug out the old one for a listen, and it still sounds as awesome to me as ever. Apart from the haunting music and the goosbumps it always gives me, the main reason why I love that song so much is that my favourite singer when I was a teenager sings the opening lines.

Yes, I was (and still am!) a MASSIVE Paul Young fan. He's tall dark and incredibly handsome, and damn sexy to boot. His voice just melts me. I went to one of his concerts back in 1986, just after my 14th birthday :)o ), and, although I shouldn't admit to it here, I had a major crush on him even back then.

I was stood right at the front, and when he sang my favourite song he looked me in the eye and pointed at me, as he sang, "Everytime you go away, you take a piece of me with you." I swooned and nearly died on the spot. I'll never forget that day, for as long as I live.

I had posters of him all over my bedroom wall for years, and played his records constantly. I even had a scarf, with his face on it, which I used to cuddle. Me obssessive? Never! :p

I can honestly say that he's the only pop star/famous person I've ever fantasised about. I'd still have him now.

Anyway, this is that song he sang to me (he did, honestly!). I'm listening to it now, and his voice still does funny things to me...

Everytime You Go Away ~ Paul Young

Hey! if we can solve any problem
Then why do we lose so many tears
Oh, and so you go again
When the leading man appears
Always the same thing
Can't you see,
we've got everything goin' on and on and on

Every time you go away,
you take a piece of me with you...
Every time you go away,
you take a piece of me with you...

Go on and go free, yeah
Maybe you're too close to see
I can feel your body move
It doesn't mean that much to me
I can't go on sayin' the same thing
Just can't you see,
we've got everything
baby even though you know

Every time you go away,
you take a piece of me with you...
Every time you go away,
you take a piece of me with you...

I can't go on sayin' the same thing
'Cause baby, cancha see,
we've got everything goin' on and on and on

Every time you go away,
you take a piece of me with you...
Every time you go away,
you take a piece of me with you...

Coursework Break

I don't know whether they still do it anymore, but they used to have this feature on the Evening Show on Radio One around the time of the school exams called hte Revision Break. The idea was that students all around the country put down their pens and books for one song and just stopped working for that track.

I really fucking need this:

Revision break - Every Me, Every You

Every NaNo-er who's paying attention and has this song to hand - put down your pens and stop and listen.

Sucker love is known to swing
Prone to cling and waste these things
Pucker up for heavens sake
There's never been so much at stake

I serve my head up on a plate
It's only comfort, calling late
'Cause there's nothing else to do
Every me and every you

This song's been in my head a lot recently.

The Logical Song by Supertramp

When I was young, it seemed that life was so wonderful,
a miracle, oh it was beautiful, magical.
And all the birds in the trees, well they'd be singing so happily,
joyfully, playfully watching me.
But then they send me away to teach me how to be sensible,
logical, responsible, practical.
And they showed me a world where I could be so dependable,
clinical, intellectual, cynical.

There are times when all the world's asleep,
the questions run too deep
for such a simple man.
Won't you please, please tell me what we've learned
I know it sounds absurd
but please tell me who I am.

Now watch what you say or they'll be calling you a radical,
liberal, fanatical, criminal.
Won't you sign up your name, we'd like to feel you're
acceptable, respectable, presentable, a vegtable!

At night, when all the world's asleep,
the questions run so deep
for such a simple man.
Won't you please, please tell me what we've learned
I know it sounds absurd
but please tell me who I am.

I love that song. Needs to be followed up with a bit of Rush.

Subdivisions

Sprawling on the fringes of the city
In geometric order
An insulated border
In between the bright lights
And the far unlit unknown

Growing up it all seems so one-sided
Opinions all provided
The future pre-decided
Detached and subdivided
In the mass production zone
Nowhere is the dreamer or the misfit so alone

Chorus
(Subdivisions)
In the high school halls
In the shopping malls
Conform or be cast out
(Subdivisions)
In the basement bars
In the backs of cars
Be cool or be cast out
Any escape might help to smooth the unattractive truth
But the suburbs have no charms to soothe the restless dreams of youth

Drawn like moths we drift into the city
The timeless old attraction
Cruising for the action
Lit up like a firefly
Just to feel the living night

Some will sell their dreams for small desires
Or lose the race to rats
Get caught in ticking traps
And start to dream of somewhere
To relax their restless flight
Somewhere out of a memory of lighted streets on quiet nights...

Chorus

Here's a piece from one of my favourite albums - The Wild, The Innocent and The E-Street Shuffle by Bruce Springsteen

Asbury Park - 4th of July (Sandy)

Sandy the fireworks are hailin' over Little Eden tonight
Forcin' a light into all those stoned-out faces left stranded on this Fourth of July
Down in town the circuit's full with switchblade lovers so fast so shiny so sharp
And the wizards play down on Pinball Way on the boardwalk way past dark
And the boys from the casino dance with their shirts open like Latin lovers along the shore
Chasin' all them silly New York girls

Sandy the aurora is risin' behind us
The pier lights our carnival life forever
Love me tonight for I may never see you again
Hey Sandy girl

Now the greasers they tramp the streets or get busted for trying to sleep on the beach all night
Them boys in their spiked high heels ah Sandy their skins are so white
And me I just got tired of hangin' in them dusty arcades bangin' them pleasure machines
Chasin' the factory girls underneath the boardwalk where they promise to unsnap their jeans
And you know that tilt-a-whirl down on the south beach drag
I got on it last night and my shirt got caught
And that Joey kept me spinnin' I didn't think I'd ever get off

Oh Sandy the aurora is risin' behind us
The pier lights our carnival life on the water
Runnin' down the beach at night with my boss's daughter
Well he ain't my boss no more Sandy

Sandy, the angels have lost our desire for us
I spoke to 'em just last night and they said they won't set themselves on fire for us anymore
Every summer when the weather gets hot they ride that road down from heaven on their Harleys they come and they go
And you can see `em dressed like stars in all the cheap little seashore bars parked making love with their babies out on the Kokomo
Well the cops finally busted Madame Marie for tellin' fortunes better than they do
This boardwalk life for me is through
You know you ought to quit this scene too

Sandy the aurora's rising behind us, the pier lights our carnival life forever
Oh love me tonight and I promise I'll love you forever

It's a gorgeous night here in the heart of Texas. Chill in the air, leaves falling to the ground, big bright moon overhead and a groove in me. I feel like dancing. :)

Well, it's a marvelous night for a Moondance
With the stars up above in your eyes
A fantabulous night to make romance
'Neath the cover of October skies
And all the leaves on the trees are falling
To the sound of the breezes that blow
And I'm trying to please to the calling
Of your heart-strings that play soft and low
And all the night's magic seems to whisper and hush
And all the soft moonlight seems to shine in your blush

Chorus:
Can I just have one a' more Moondance with you, my love
Can I just make some more romance with a-you, my love

Well, I wanna make love to you tonight
I can't wait 'til the morning has come
And I know that the time is just right
And straight into my arms you will run
And when you come my heart will be waiting
To make sure that you're never alone
There and then all my dreams will come true, dear
There and then I will make you my own
And every time I touch you, you just tremble inside
And I know how much you want me that you can't hide

Chorus

Repeat 1st Verse

One more Moondance with you in the moonlight
On a magic night
La, la, la, la in the moonlight
On a magic night
Can't I just have one more dance with you my love

It's Not Easy

Easy easy, it's not easy
To say what I feel when nothing seems real
Not easy, it's not easy
To be someone's friend when the pain it never ends
Not easy, it's not easy
To keep up the fight when nothing turns out right

Easy I got to take it easy, I got to take it easy

Easy it's not easy to open your heart when love's torn it apart
Easy it's not easy to hold your head high when you want to sit and cry
Easy it's not easy to fall on your knees and say Lord help me please
Easy I got to take it easy, Oh please, please, please easy

Easy easy it's not easy
Gotta gotta take it easy
It's not easy
It's never easy

If you're not the One - Daniel Bedingfield

If you’re not the one then why does my soul feel glad today?
If you’re not the one then why does my hand fit yours this way?
If you are not mine then why does your heart return my call
If you are not mine would I have the strength to stand at all

I never know what the future brings
But I know you are here with me now
We’ll make it through
And I hope you are the one I share my life with

I don’t want to run away
but I can’t take it,
I don’t understand
If I’m not made for you
then why does my heart tell me that I am?
Is there any way that I can stay in your arms?

If I don’t need you then why am I crying on my bed?
If I don’t need you then why does your name resound in my head?
If you’re not for me then why does this distance maim my life?
If you’re not for me then why do I dream of you as my wife?

I don’t know why you’re so far away
But I know that this much is true
We’ll make it through
And I hope you are the one I share my life with
And I wish that you could be the one I die with
And I pray in you’re the one I build my home with
I hope I love you all my life

I don’t want to run away
but I can’t take it,
I don’t understand
If I’m not made for you
then why does my heart tell me that I am
Is there any way that I can stay in your arms?

‘Cause I miss you, body and soul so strong that it takes my breath away
And I breathe you into my heart and pray for the strength to stand today
‘Cause I love you, whether it’s wrong or right
And though I can’t be with you tonight
And know my heart is by your side

I don’t want to run away
but I can’t take it,
I don’t understand
If I’m not made for you
then why does my heart tell me that I am

Mat - Good choice! One of my particular favourites. Following on from that:

Perhaps Love - John Denver and Placido Domingo

Perhaps love is like a resting place
A shelter from the storm
It exists to give you comfort
It is there to keep you warm
And in those times of trouble
When you are most alone
The memory of love will bring you home

Perhaps love is like a window
Perhaps an open door
It invites you to come closer
It wants to show you more
And even if you lose yourself
And don't know what to do
The memory of love will see you through

For love to some is like a cloud
To some as strong as steel
For some a way of living
For some a way to feel

And some say love is holding on
And some say letting go
And some say love is everything
And some say they don't know

Dedicated to JL for bringing it to my mind.

The Great Pretender

Oh-oh, yes I'm the great pretender
Pretending that I'm doing well
My need is such I pretend too much
I'm lonely but no one can tell
Oh-oh, yes I'm the great pretender
Adrift in a world of my own
I've played the game but to my real shame
You've left me to grieve all alone

Too real is this feeling of make-believe
Too real when I feel what my heart can't conceal,

Oh, yes I'm the great pretender
Just laughing and gay like a clown
I seem to be what I'm not, you see
I'm wearing my heart like a crown
Pretending that you're still around

OMG! That song!

There was a guy who used to sing that to me, and mean every word. Bless him.

He could hit the high note, too. Double
