You're right. A straight resistance lamp dimmer is bad for motors.{snip}
i also saw somewhere that using the dimmer switches/power reducers can bugger the motors. because they use a brushless motor, its not good for it.
but i did read that on the internet....
Look for a router speed control/anti kick-back at the hardware store. You can safely give your MW a variable speed. I got one for well under $20 at Harbor Freight. They have an online site if your town doesn't have one.
Sears has them too; Lowes/Home Depot/Menards don't show any.
You can also use a ceiling fan speed controller, but you'll have to rig it up. Any size will do as the MW doesn't take much power. Put it in a plastic box and add cable clamps. Cut an three-wire extension cord for to get a plug for the input side and an outlet for the fan side.
