Discussion for each book will start the first day of the next month!

If you have ever read the book you are more than welcome to join the discussion!

Some things I would like to know:

Did you like the book overall or not?

Do you feel it portrays BDSM in a real way, a positive way and/or your way?

Did you like the sex scenes in the book?

Did you like the rest of the book, the story in it?

Would you be interested in reading another book by this author?

What did you like best about this selection?

What did you like the least?

How would you have changed the story?

Of course, you don't have to answer the questions above and you can say anything you like.

Thanks to you, beautiful Graceanne for doing the hard work of indexing for the group! It's a much more elegant solution that I had done before!

waves.................cool Thread :rose: Miss Fury :rose: I am sure it will prove really interesting. Its one of my interests with BDSM practise is portrayed in an accurate sense in Classic BDSM Literature or whether we ourselves have a habit of moulding ourselves to be more like the fiction. I mean take the Beauty series , how many 'submissives ' ( Beauty was a slave but hey .....lol) "ohhhh I wish I could be just like Beauty". Not this one I can assure you, I spent hours pondering if a 10th of what was claimed in that book could be possibly acheived by a mere mortal. No I say No..........laughs. Cry foul of this. Though I admit I may have convinced myself I could have had a pony boy bridled and saddled to perfection by the end of book 3 .Which we all know it utter BS............smiles. Once I got over my total digust at the entire three books I made myself read as a point of reference to popular 'culture'. Then it dawned on me its FICTION.....smiles. Not very bright for a smart enough 'girl' sometimes. Ohh if any here fall from the 'Classics' I'll be in like Flyn on all your criteria. Best of Luck with the new Thread :rose: Miss Fury :rose:

Some things I would like to know:

Did you like the book overall or not?

Do you feel it portraits BDSM in a real way, a positive way and/or your way?

Did you like the sex scenes in the book?

Did you like the rest of the book, the story in it?

Would you be interested in reading another book by this author?

What did you like best about this selection?

What did you like the least?

How would you have changed the story?

Of course, you don't have to answer the questions above and you can say anything you like.

Fury :rose:

Hi Fury,

SHould be able to get to it by this evening. :rose:

I reserve the right to change my answers...*giggling*

Hmm this is tough as it was the first book in this genre I have read, so I will go with it was okay.

Do you feel it portraits BDSM in a real way, a positive way and/or your way?

I think for me it seemed that the pace was off. Since I do no participate in the lifestyle I can't say for sure but would hope that trust etc would be based on more than simple attraction and willingness to submit to someone. She never really trusted him did she? I guess my version of any relationship that revolves around these types of things would have to be built over time. For some people though...that is not the case. Maybe I felt like this because I read the book quickly...*shrug* The character was also kind of going in blind and though I think she was supposed to be driven by a want to know about her past...I personally would be more skittish...so related to the book in that way.

I don't think it was positive as he turned out to be the bad guy when in reality I wanted him to end up with a heart....a good guy. I think this is mixed up in my version of what I would prefer however. It's kind of like the lifestyle in general...one wrong news story...or one person that blames they lifestyle for their actions can put it in a bad light. In reality it's all about choices, preferences, and degrees of what is acceptable for each person and their partner. I would think it goes back to the whole thing of safe, consenual, sane. Were these characters sane? Was she ever safe...did she ever really feel safe? Did he care for her safety?

Her motives were a little off to. Was she with him out of want to be and enjoyment...or was that just a product of her goal...to find out who hurt her? I would go with the latter...so what does that say??

Did you like the sex scenes in the book?

Yes mainly because I am into description and because I have no experince in many of the things mentioned, and needed the details. At the same time....I don't really trust this author to give me the whole story or maybe the correct description of things because sometimes I felt she wasn't always giving me the overall picture from both parties. This made me think about other books I've read. I'm okay with only seeing the main characters part of the story..while seeing the supporting characters through the eyes of the main. Here however..I wanted to know the motiviation of him...which I guess just leads to my own want to know the male perspective in general.

I would have to say...I thought I wouldn't be surprised by some things....and was.

Did you like the rest of the book, the story in it?

I enjoyed the angle of amnesia....and the mystery behind it. Mystery is my favorite genre so that helped. I liked that we had a storyline however found myself speeding through because I was so curious.

Would you be interested in reading another book by this author?

Yes simply because I want to see if with a different type of story line she gives me more.

What did you like best about this selection?

Some things described me or attracted me...example: "He wears nothing, but his nakedness does not discomfort him as mine does with me." I always wonder at that.....and would want a man like that...that is confident in himself. It rings true with me though....I would not be comfortable in my nakedness...be it physical...or emotional. I also enjoyed the parallels it made me think of in terms of scars....outside, inside....etc.

What did you like the least?

Feeling like I couldn't believe it would actually happen and feeling like she left things out. Maybe because my own experience is limited I felt this way.

How would you have changed the story?

I don't know what I thought about the sister Gina....her presence kind of threw me.

Thanks Fury for thinking of some great questions!

I liked your review and answers Hisbabydoll! Here are mine.

Overall I found the book made me keep turning pages to find out what happened next, so I'd have to say I liked it well enough.

I did not feel that this book portrays BDSM in a real, positive or even my way. I found that irritating about it. A lot of the book seemed artificial and made to fit if you know what I mean.
Many of the details are just too convenient for me to swallow.

I did like many of the sex scenes in the book anyway because despite the fact that she didn't trust him and they really didn't have a relationship, the scenes were hot. In particular, I find myself fantasizing a lot more about enemas and being milked now. The first I have no experience with the second, well I've had some and wouldn't mind more, especially done in a humiliating or objectifying way. I remember very fondly, how hard and almost impacted my breasts would get when the feeding schedule was off. I remember all kinds of great and uncomfortable sensations from all those years.

I guess I liked the story okay. I wanted to know what happened next but as I said, the too convenient details were jarring to me. I didn't like Gina's role. I didn't like that she confessed but didn't do it after all. Not, I'm not sure the final disposition of things. Didn't the girl just fall and assuming she was dead, he tried to bury her? I can't recall now.

I also wanted (James?) to love the girl. I wanted his relationship with his sister to either not be there or be defined.

I think the writer did a poor job of figuring out why her character would want to play with the Dom sort of dude. She was "drawn" to it. She "had" to do it. Did she ever trust him? Not completely and therefore she should have NEVER been playing with him. I suspect the writer has little if any experience with BDSM or kink. She has heard about and researched some cool things but really doesn't get why the girl would want to have all this happen except for a dark fascination/need that can't be explained and to find out about her past.

My favorite character in the book, the only nice one, was the Mother btw.

Since some of the sex have infected my fantasies, and it was a page turner, yes, I would read another book by this author.

What I liked best were the sex scenes, the details about running a winery and cooking. Oh and also when they touched some pretty universal truths, like how she was uncomfortable nude and with her scars but he was not. That was a great point Hisbabydoll!

What I liked least was the too convenient details. Not only can't she remember who she was, her face has been changed so they can't recognize her. The fact that she put herself at the mercy of someone she didn't trust, well she didn't trust him at least 88% of the time. The fact that the Dom and sub didn't own their roles and establish a relationship prior to playing.

The fact that after he fucked her ONCE he knew who she was. I say BULLSHIT! He thought she was dead, men are not usually that perceptive when they are fucking. "Oh she clamps on me like Carmen. She responds to being spanked like Linda." Uh, no, I just don't buy it. Some men may be that perceptive but most are not although I think a really good Dom could be.

I would have had them decide to name and admit they enjoyed their roles in sex, develop a relationship before hand and things would not have been so convenient in the story. I would have cut the sister out completely or defined her role better too.

In the month of March, our book pick was Panic Snap by Laura Reese.

Some things I would like to know:

Did you like the book overall or not?

Yes when I read it, did so in one sitting.

Do you feel it portraits BDSM in a real way, a positive way and/or your way?

Not enough personal experience to even fathom a guess.

Did you like the sex scenes in the book?

I had to refreash my memory but yes I did.

Did you like the rest of the book, the story in it?

Enought to read it straight through to the end.

Would you be interested in reading another book by this author?

Yes

What did you like best about this selection?

I liked how Carly without any real basis for her desire for being whipped says she needs it. So the question is why?? My answer is that somewhere in the core of who she was and now is her mind and body recongize something and though she tells James that she does not trust him she still consents to be his boy toy. I also liked how James is a sadistic bastard to Carly. From page 156 ...Putting his hand on my clitoris, he stroked me, then usded his fingers to separate my lips, to hold me open. He put the spout close to my vagina. I didn't breath. I could feel the warmth of the kettle, so near it was to my fleash. He is scalding her pussy because she would not eat from her dog dish. I think that is so hot, sorry for the pun, but not sure I could do that to a woman.

What did you like the least?

The author's use of bdsm to move the mystery part of the story along.

How would you have changed the story?

More of the bdsm angle to be added to the book.

Of course, you don't
have to answer the questions above and you can say anything you like.

Fury :rose:

I think we need to add a question at the end of the responses, I mean why should Fury have all the fun asking??

Why did the story take place on a winery??

Hmm...I never really considered the setting. It gives the characters a place to live, work, etc and still not have to answer to anyone. They can come and go as they please as they are the "boss". They are kind of in their own world out there. It also gives James, Gina, and the mother something to care about...showing their compassion? It's easy to show how people would go in and out of their lives, as a worker, visitor, buyer etc. Maybe these are only surface reasons? I like the question Leeroy.

My feelings on Panic Snap:

Did you like the book overall or not?

Somewhat. It had some good points but overall more weaknesses

Do you feel it portraits BDSM in a real way, a positive way and/or your way?

Not really. James does not seem to really care for Carly. He just uses her. Plus Carly immediately takes up with him with really no time to get to know him. There is a lack of realism to me here because although I know that emotions can be very powerful, Carly has no reservations to speak of in quickly submitting to this man who she suspects tried to brutally kill her earlier.

Did you like the sex scenes in the book?

Yes they were one of my favorite things. Some good play there.

Did you like the rest of the book, the story in it?

The story felt weak and somewhat contrived. A little too much over the top with the cooking. I felt like I was reading "A Year in Provence"
On the other hand I did like the winery scenes and descriptions but I am biased in this area. I have been to Napa and Sonoma a number of times and liked the wines that were mentioned and my friend also owns a commercial winery and I have participated in wine making from pruning and tying to harvest, crushing, blending, bottling and barrel tasting.

Would you be interested in reading another book by this author?

Possibly.

What did you like best about this selection?

I think I have already covered it above. the sex scenes and the winery.

What did you like the least?

The way things felt too pat and also there was a problem with believability. James and Carly (above), Gina confessing. I didn't really know these characters well enough and so I couldn't relate to why they did things.

How would you have changed the story?

Better character development. Carly taking more time to actually start to become involved with James.

Interesting Raven!

I liked the winery and I love foodie talk so all that worked for me.

I do think James cared for the chick more than the ending suggested. I think he cared in spite of himself. I wasn't pleased at the final disposition of their relationship.

I absolutely agree that he should NOT have taken her on nor should she have asked without having more a relationship built.

Why was the story set in a winery? My guess is that the author had some experience with wineries or researched it and so, like many plot lines in the book, it was a convenience. A "this is what I have in the forefront of my brain right now so this is what I will weave into my story," sort of thing.

But the wine making season is not the growing season.

I just threw that out there as a thought, how so Raven at some point your going to have to harvest your grapes and do something with them quickly right before they rot??

After harvest (which is in early to late fall depending on the types of grapes, the growing season and the types of wines you want), grapes are crushed and the juice is put into barrels and any additives are put in. Then they are allowed to ferment. This takes place during the late fall and winter. Most changes and additives are usually done in the winter when the vines are dormant there is not so much to do outside.

And Gina dies in between a partial harvest of grapes or after the final one right??

Yes, I think it was the later part of the harvest.

So maybe Laura had a reason to put her death there then?? I might be making a Boo Radley thing out of this too, tring to read too deep into her text.

You may be correct, but my feeling is that since there really was not that much character development, I doubt she was trying to be that deep.

Ok Raven lets change this up a bit, fury said in book post before that she couldn't play without trust, do you think that somewhere deep down her mind if not her body on some level knew about James's desires to own and dominate her again like he did in the past?? And for this reason alone she started to play with him, before he placed the carrot of her past infront of her??

I think it would have been written better for her to be drawn to him because of that past connection in which she worshipped and loved him. He should have cared more for her in the past and present IMO.

If the character development had covered what she needed and why better, the book would have been MUCH better. She could have had what seemed like irrefutable reason to doubt him later but I'd rather that proof to have been wrong in the end.

Did you like the book overall or not?

Fair -- it was an interesting premise and kept me engaged for the most part but it was trying at times and kind of depressing

Do you feel it portraits BDSM in a real way, a positive way and/or your way?

I think it portrays it in a real way for those characters, in a realistic way as far as what is possible but not as far as what goes on within the BDSM Community as most lifestylers understand it. There are things about James and Carly's relationship that both appeal to and repell me.

Did you like the sex scenes in the book?

Yep!

Did you like the rest of the book, the story in it?

I liked the story, but like Raven I got heartily fed up with the endless attempt to be literary by going on and on about the plants and the vineyard and the quality of the light etc. Those things didn't move the story along for me and they weren't moving or well-written enough to exist for their own sake. It was masturbatory and not in a good way.

Would you be interested in reading another book by this author?

Yes, I picked up Topping from Below at the same time as Panic Snap since my library had both. I haven't started it yet, but I'm hoping that as an earlier effort it will perhaps be less "literary". Of course, exactly the opposite might be true. I guess I'll find out.

What did you like best about this selection?

I'm a pervert. I liked the sex.

What did you like the least?

Apart from the...what was it Raven called it? The Year in Provence passages? --Apart from those -- I never really liked Carly much. I didn't actively dislike her, but none of the characters were very likeable people and that's tough on me.

How would you have changed the story?

Even though I wasn't wild about Carly or James, I'd have liked for them to have ended up together. I mean, Carly wasn't any better than James to begin with. In fact, she was possibly worse than him. She's only got the chance to sit her high horse and be judgemental because she loses her memory in the accident. So she comes back, destroys everyone's life --- granted it's not done out of malice --- and then when she realizes what she's done, she feels remorse but she doesn't confess her own misdeeds. She walks away scott free. And yet I have a soft spot for lovers and love. What did James' death accomplish? He's punished for the murder of his wife? Then where is Carly's punishment? And why is Gina punished? If we're going to be unfair anyway then give me a happy ending for the lovers, dammit. ;->
