The Birth of Horny Town U.S.A.

I love this idea, but unfortunately I don't have much writing time these days. If it's at all possible, I might contribute something later on, maybe a character passing through town or whatever.

But I do look forward to reading the stories and watching things develop. Looks like you're all off to a great start already. :)

Hey MC! I was hoping you would be into joining our little town. Feel free to pop in any time. With limited writing time you might want to consider the multi-writer vignette idea that Weird Harold came up with. I would love to team up with you on something like this. Keep it in mind!

Very cool WH! I figured this couldn't be a brand new idea for the place. I will see if I can hunt back and find anything. Do you remember any particular writers involved? Feel free to join in if you would like.

This vignette idea opens up two concepts - full single stories as well as shared stories like they had in the past. Very neat. I think both will work well here.
It took a while to find one of the discussion threads from 2003 which reminded me of the name -- Snippetsville

The stories were posted under the name Snippetsville Group

wildsweetone was a major player in the Snippetsville Group and is still active in the poetry forum -- perhaps she still has some of the maps and such linked.

I didn't come up with it, I just remembered it as a previous "shared universe" project -- also inspired by Thieves World (tm), IIRC.

Yeah I could have worded that better. Thanks for keeping me honest and less sloppy! So that project was also inspired by "Thieves World".

I remember reading some of Snippetsville now that you mention it.

So who is going to have Sheer Fun, the Ladies nightwear shop ?. Owner, Mrs Minter (late 30s, widowed, 3 daughters), staffed by whoever you like.

Me? I'm not a lot of good writing sex, but I'd love to have a small office in an old building doing Techie things for vast sums of money.
It's called "The Write Place". Run by Mr Fred Place (45 ish, widowed, two kids grown up and living away (one of each)); nice house with a verandah overlooking the lake. Helps people one way or another. Drives an old Jaguar Coupe.

The town is very old and does not have the roads laid out on a grid, but laid out according to someone's field/s, the lay of the land, etc.. There's a main highway to wherever about 10 miles north.

There's a clay deposit (good for building bricks). Water comes from a huge under-ground deposit.

The town is called "Hornoville"

Heard back from VM and he wouldn't mind us using his work. Love that Bear!!! He has three towns actually that he created.

Here is a link to the stories. What do you think?

"Bells" http://www.literotica.com/stories/showstory.php?id=335861

"Drums" http://www.literotica.com/stories/showstory.php?id=343369

"The Round-Up Is Over" http://www.literotica.com/stories/showstory.php?id=341587

All feature one town.

"Lost and Redeemed" http://www.literotica.com/stories/showstory.php?id=352751

is another town.

and the other town that Stella mentioned earlier is here:

"Rented Out" Chapters 1-4

http://www.literotica.com/stories/showstory.php?id=481580
http://www.literotica.com/stories/showstory.php?id=483041

note all the above mentioned stories are completely the work of Voluptuary_Manque just to give proper credit where it is due.

So what does everybody think?

I have contacted an artist that is active in the threads to see about participating in designing and mapping the place and will report results as again I really feel the more involved the better.

Cool! You are not kidding when you say you have answers! Great work. I have a lot of reading ahead of me.

Thanks again - Lit

Helping design Snippetsville was fun. It was a little overdesigned in some respects, being limited to stories that were "600 words -5/+15." You're looking at a shared universe with more scope for the authors to encroach on each other.

You might want to look up the Grantville shared universe created by Eric Flint (somewhere on Baen.com last I saw it) which is closer to a current shared universe like Thieves' World(tm) was. The writers' guidelines for the Grantville universe will give you some idea of what is needed.

I thought the idea was to create one, not adapt a former work

Definitely this will be new.

I am looking over Snippetsville to learn from previous experience.

Stella had suggested using VM's already made town from his story (but it turns out he has three) so we can adapt the town itself from what he set up or come up with our own.

I am tossed on this as I want to incorporate as many people as possible into this which leans me towards using VM's but I also want this to be our own from square one.

Another thing I wanted to mention specifically to you HP Is that the stories don't have to involve sex. If you want to write a story within our town/characters and it makes for a good story, by all means go for it as that is the whole point.

At this point I am waiting for feedback from participants as that is what this is about - this isn't my project - this is ours. I plan to keep things organized and tracked.

More descriptions to come.. or feel free to add on any traits or quirks you think would work well. :) I also tried to leave the people open ended so that there was room for development, and so that there could be interpretations for the different authors. :)

Shear Pleasure
Owner~ Kitty Wells. She just turned 30, has a sometimes boyfriend, (someone make him up please! lol.) and knows everything about everyone. She's an extrovert, can be a little on the obnoxious side, but everyone loves her anyway. She would do anything for anyone, and has gotten burnt more than once being a do-gooder. Makes a post-it not each day of a 'quote of the day' and sticks it to her mirror. Great conversation starter.

~Employees~
Margaret- a snob. No one knows her real age... they guess she is around 50. Talks about everyone behind their backs, but acts like she's the virgin Mary. Too bad the skeletons in her closet have skeletons in their closets... ;)

Amy- sweet girl, about 22, a couple years out of beauty school.. Kitty offered her a job and took her under her wing. Never really dated much until she moved into town..

Ty- a 40-something gay male trying to pretend he isnt. His constant trail of admirers kinda kills his cover. He loves what he does, but his true dream is to start an interior design business. If he could just get his father to front him the cash to get started.. :)

The Snippetsville and Grantville suggestions aren't about adapting those shared universes, but learning about which questions need to be answered in creating a new shared universe.

The orignal inspiration, Thieves' World, nominally started out as stories by various authors about the patrons of a single medieval/fantasy tavern; there was a good bit of behind the scenes negotiatiing similar to the Snippetsville threads before the Vulgar Unicorn opened for business.

As for Geographic verisimilitude, consider that "H?ville" could be the suburb of a more/less Prosperous town, "just across the River".

Isolated by Uptown/ 'cross river trash' stereotypes? This would allow more depth to the conflicts and resolutions.

Perhaps a five 'person' Police force, the Chief of which knows all and tells nothing, while teaching his new Chicago transferee, Small Town Policing. The three others are townee's, and long ago learned that tolerance and humor kept the town's "Wheels Greased"?

I like!

My Darren and Tiffany are def. "cross river trash" types.

of course, I'm already slashing the chief and his big city employee in my head.

Sorry-- just can't stop myself.

My story-writing muse seems to have skipped town, but my charting muse is just itching to make a map of your little town.

That would be incredible! I PMed Austin today to see if there was any interest from the resident artist but haven't heard yet. No reason two people cannot work together. Take a look at posts #13, 14, 30, and 40 for geographic suggestions to date.

VM also offered use of some towns he already made as in post #31.

He is very open to discussing this if you want to contact him.

Thank you so much. Emerald Kitten and I are itching to write stories but want a map first for accuracy.

VM's towns can be rewritten as well-- that happened, IIR, with bits of the Theive's world, where some writer had a character and moved them to the town.

I mean-- I have had the idea for Darren and Tiff for years now, but never fleshed them out before...

Give me a day or two and I'll see what I can come up with.

Lin Fu is just itching to get her hands on Darren at the drive-in!

Every imaginary town should have a college or university nearby.

Brilliant and dotty professors, nubile students of both sexes, an autocractic president, sycophantic staff, deranged groundkeepers, libidinous coaches of both sexes...the whole town turns out for football games in the fall...sororities and fraternities...town vs. gown conflicts...theres a heap of stories right there.

Some townsfolk have kids attending Applebower College of Arts and Sciences, others have kids that visit the dorms regularly. ;)

I'd consider adding a nutty professor and his bizarre experiments with student volunteers to the mix for starters.

I think one of the first things that needs to be decided, then, is, "Just How Big Is Hornytown?"

I don't recall the population of Sanctuary (the setting of Thieves' World) but I think it was around 10,000 to 20,000. Grantville is based on a small west Virginia miining town of about 3,000-5,000 and Snippetsville had a population of 599 permanent residents.

Each size presents different possibilities for, (and limitations on,) assignations and tomfoolery.

throwing in a college, which I think is a good idea, I lean towards 20,000 - 25,000 as that makes for a good size community but it is not a metropolis by any means.
