It seemed cool. It was one of the first sci-fi novels, after all. One example (which I need to continue) of what I was talking about is my story "The Professor's Bride", set in a world where lawyers are all employed by the State, polygamy is legal, marriages are arranged by a matchmaking bureaucracy, and a one-world dictatorship is enforced by a paramilitary police force called "The Corps of Guardians".
 
I haven't read any of his books all the way through (usually small print), but I liked Isaac Asimov's stuff, which could be compaired to Fritz Lang's Metropolis.
I wouldn't be suprised if Metropolis was based on one of his books.
He even thought of air ships before anyone else (with the exception of Jules Verne).

There seems to be endless possibilities with scenarios involving global warming or an ice age. I could imagine one, with the survival of the human race in question all social mores and norms have to be thrown out the window. The urge to survive and propigate take on a sudden urgentness that wasn't there before. The ever rising heat or sudden cold awakens a primal lust, for both survival and each other, in humans. A future where sex is just as important as eating and drinking for survival?

You could have some madman make a plague which kills you if you don't have sex with someone (maybe the male version and the female version neutralize eachother temporarily when you swap fluids). It would, of course, be a super-smart plague which only affects people 18 and over.

Not necessarily. Since this is fiction a global warming or ice age earth society can have any characteristics you like. I can see a future where battles and wars for increasinly scarce and expensive resources lead to men practically making themselves extinct. Who's left to fill the men's shoes? The women of course. The once powerful and boastful male is now at the beck and call of his female overlords. I know there are several feminist utopian novels and short stories out there so this isn't entirely new ground but I doubt any of them have erotic overtones. So in a future world feminism may not be necessarily dead

i think his books Pornocopia, If I pay thee not in gold, were some of this first mergings of sci-fi/fantasy with explicit sexuality that i came across in book form (and in a collegiate library to boot)

I know Xanth has some sex but it's more about puns and self discovery to my mind

Well, actually I'm a male Dom, so I look for scenarios where men can realistically dominate and control women.

The scenario I had in mind (though yours could work for a story for you to write) is this:

Global Warming leads to massive flooding, the collapse of much of civilization, and a descent into a period of barbarism and savagery. Animals are a real threat again, an Ice Age follows, resources are scarce, warring happens, and women look to men for hunting and protection. Rival clans form and stake out their territory.

The old, soft life of luxury and comfort is ended. Lifespans shorten again, medicine becomes primitive, life is more dangerous, technology cannot be quickly replicated, and youths grow up sooner. Nations, macro-markets, the Internet, even electricity are things of the past.

Given the growing scarcity of men, polygamy becomes the social norm. Using the leverage of scarcity, the men realize that they have more options sexually. That and their brute, physical strength give them social advantages again. A patriarchal society emerges, with hunter-gatherers and herdsmen forming the backbone of the world's economy.

Life is rough in the new Dark Ages.

I like to think about the plausible scientific reasoning/consequences of things like alien-human pregnancies and genetic modifications. I was a biology major, and my family is way into science (we critique sci-fi movies when their explanations are bogus), so I think I can come up with good enough reasons. Not Michael Crichton-level, of course, but OK to the untrained eye.

Enough self-serving background. The reason I said all that was so I could say this:

The/a way the super-virus would only effect 18-year-olds is if sexual maturity occurs at 18 at the earliest. This late development of humans would also be caused by the super-virus, and would only effect sexual maturity, but not physical maturity (otherwise 18-year-olds would have the physical proportions of pre-pubescent kids, which would defeat the purpose).

The sex-virus idea is great. Reminds me a little of "Druuna," which I haven't read in ages.

One scenario that might be connected to such a thing is to simply have the virus strike at 13 and have a 5 year latency, so that it only becomes a threat at 18, after which point the disease is almost terminal, unless they fuck. Suppose the government eliminated all other viruses (including AIDS and STDs), and the death toll from the plague was already so high that the nations of the world agreed to a one world government, with an end to war, and require people to go to glory holes to mate frequently- males until 35 (when they start losing fertility) and females until 25 (when they become less fertile). Men attend them daily, whereas women do so only on their fertile days.

Aside from this civic "duty", men and women are permitted to do as they please in their private lives, including having otherwise exclusive relationships if they so please (such as traditional marriages). They can homosexual relationships as well. Once they reach the age of termination, where they have fulfilled the Quota, they are released from procreative or "compulsory breeding service", and can "retire" to completely private lives.

Because more women than men are free from service, however, polygamy becomes very common, as women tend to wait until their service is over to marry (for a variety of reasons, including the women's sexual ethics and level of sentimentality regarding the amount of love attached to sex).

Professional custodians of both sexes raise children, instead of birth parents. These have the benefit of plenty of time for children, plus training in dealing with them. So, the women only have to bear the children, not raise them, leading to a boost in their career standing. With maternity issues being less significant, equal pay for equal work becomes a reality, and there are more women than men in the corporate world, since there are more women than men in the general population.

Yeah, it's always good to brainstorm reasons for stuff. I have an alien-human idea that I've created biological differences and cultures for, but I have no story. :rolleyes:

It's probably because I hate to read a good story and suddenly wonder how XYZ was accomplished. Most people don't care, I think, but better to think the readers of a time-travel story are theoretical physicists than people who still believe the Earth is the center of the universe.

I think it have a lot of potential not only as a erotic story but also as a social Sf in which the assumptions about morals, sexual habits and politics are examined. This kind of world can also consider the conflict betwen the sudden evironmental pressure for survival and inbreeded habits of thoughts we inheirted from our hunter-gather ancestors (sexual equality, etc). In a good hand, it would make for a very rich and sexy story.

Glad to get some input on one of my more extreme utopian scenarios. I tend to like creating worlds with strange sexual mores, because it reflects the idea that our society's rules are not universal or objective absolutes, that there are alternatives, even if the ones presented are flawed.

One detail that I like is that there are more, lot more, women than men and that breeding is open to any men. There's a reason why societies that are democratic or peaceful tends to be monogameous in practice, if every men have a chanch at just one wife then there would be less frustration, less risk-taking, less violence like we see in Middle east that is heavily overweight in favor of males in sex ratio. This is merely one factor in why some areas are so messed up, but it's a big one. I'm curious how China and India will solves this problem. This could be a food for interesting SF erotica stories

Well, given the infidelity rate (80%), plus swingers like me and my slave, I doubt that the West that is all that monogamous.

But you have a point about the shortage of women in the Middle East. It lends itself to sexual frustration, sublimated to anger and hate. If many men have no prospect of ever getting laid, they are more susceptible to false promises like 72 virgins in Paradise if they kill someone for Allah. Not excusing them (I will never forgive Osama for 9/11), but it does explain things better.

Of course, if they would stop murdering girls in places like Pakistan....it would help.
Talk about male chauvinists.....they don't even seem to think that women are good for sex. Sounds like some sexuality issues......maybe some of them are gay?

That is correct. Monogamy is more honored in the breach than in practice. There are a lot of cheaters for a simple reason that men want to pass on as much genes as possible while women want the best genes possible so that HER sons can breed as many women as possible while getting the best resources she can get from her cockooed husband. I am very attracted to swinging but has done a few times. I discovered that it pay to be emotionally mono with a mate while sharing sexual freedom.

Another thing about sex virus is sexual selection. If any women can be breeded through glory holes or such, then it would come down to sperm compeitition. Well, being "emotionally mono" works fairly well in my current relationship. My ideal is a harem, but the cost and difficulty of that actually happening makes it more trouble than it's worth at the moment. Thus I swing. Cheating is not my thing. It doesn't appeal to my keen German sense of candor. Nietzsche, while pointing out many flaws of his fellow Germans, did praise them for their candor.

It is certainly true that the use of complete promiscuity would tend to favor certain genetic traits, such as stronger immune systems. Perhaps larger cocks would happen too. Would that mean the end of anal sex, or simply the greater popularity of lube? :D
