Place and time: Northumberland, England; 902 AD

Characters:

Eric:
  • To his own people, he is known as Eric of Kjelst. Kjelst is a medium sized town (~600 residents) at the north end of Ho Bay (Ho Bugt), which reaches inland north from where near Esbjerg, Denmark, looks out upon the North Sea.
  • To the English who will soon come to know him, he will be called Eric the Dane.
  • Image and full profile (coming).

Mylecent Hamlin
  • Only daughter of the Lord of SortVand and, with her father's death, the heir apparent to SortVand.
  • Hostage of Eric the Dane.

Hagar:
  • Friend of Eric the Dane.
  • Next in line to command Eric's Viking forces in Northumberland.

SortVand:
  • Location: ~5 miles up the River Coquet, which dumps into the North Sea near the northern extremes of the Kingdom of Northumberland.
  • SortVand is a combination of two Danish words: sort means black, vand means water, and together, in the context of this location, it means that the village is located near a bog.
  • SortVand was built by the Danes in the late 870s AD under the terms of a treaty with the King of Northumberland. Later, in 898, after this King died and his son took the throne, this portion of Northumberland was deeded to the Kingdom of Middlesbrough to the south. This more southern King sent forces to attack SortVand, killing nearly every Danish residence and reoccupying the village with English, under the supervision of a new Lord, Mylecent's father. (As a point of fact, while he knew of the slaughter afterwards, Mylecent's father had nothing to do with the slaughter.)

"Marc"

Full Name: Capitan Marcel "Marc" de Espina de Ibiza

Place in Story:

Captain of the pirate sloop, Black Dawn.

Resident (primarily) of Ibiza, an island east of the Mediterranean coast of Spain.

Physical Description:

32 years of age.
6'2", 195 pounds.
Fit, muscular (image of torso w/o shirt).
Scars (not seen in image) to be described when appropriate.

Languages:

Native tongue: Valencia (aka Catalan).

Fluent languages: All of the significant Castillian dialects (map of dialect dispersement), English, Portuguese, French, Italian, and Greek.

Semi-fluent: Most of Western Europe's primary languages, Arabic (of both North African and Turkish variants), and German.

History:

Born in Valencia, a region of Spain's eastern coast, in 1584.

Orphaned young (~5, though he doesn't recall exactly).

Lived on the streets, thieving; went by the only name he knew, Marcel.

At age 9, he was befriended by Juan Puig i Boada, a pirate of great mystery. Papa Juan, as Marc would come to call him, was of Northern African (Algerian?) descent, had a Valencian/Catalan name, sailed an Italian built ship (which he and a handful of sailor friends had stolen before he then again stole it from them with a second group of pirates), and spoke half a dozen languages from Africa, Western Europe, and the Middle East.

Juan would give Marc his new full name and a sense of pride in himself.

From 9-11, Marc lived with one of Juan's many mistresses on the island of Ibiza, 140 miles east of the Spanish mainland. During this time, he herded goats, learned to tend boats and sails, and practiced with the cutlass and other weapons.

At age 12, he killed a man as he was attempting to rape Juan's mistress. When Juan returned from a pillaging run, he immediately added Marc to his boat's crew as a quarter share boat hand.

At age 13, though, Marc uncovered a plot to assassinate Juan. After killing one man and exposing the others (which lead to their executions), Marc was elevated to a full share pirate.

At age 16, already well respected by the older men as a skilled sailor and pirate, Marc took command during a fierce, bloody fight with a pair of Spanish warships in which both Juan and the First Mate were fatally injured. He saved the boat while setting one of the Spanish sloops afire. Then, two days later (after Juan had died of his injuries), Marc convinced the crew to seek their revenge. Using only the long boats, they slipped into the mainland port from which the Spanish had been dispatched and set three warships aflame.

Marc was promoted to First Mate under the leadership of the former Second Mate. This new Captain failed at his duties, however, failing miserably in three successive attacks and losing the confidence of the crew. Marc challenged for leadership, and after quickly dispatching the Captain with a sword to the gut, he was voted to the position of Captain.

At 20, while operating off the coast of Sicily, their boat was set upon by a foursome of Italian warships. They escaped but were badly damaged and barely reached the North African coast. They abandoned ship and split up, vowing to make their ways back to Ibiza. Marc would steal a small boat, then a larger one, then yet a larger one, pirating and thieveing along the way.

At 24, he was again reunited with half of his original crew and an equal number of new men on Ibiza, pirating once more on a new boat.

And for the past 8 years, the now 32 year old Captain and his well known boat, the Black Dawn, have been the scourge of the Western Mediterranean.

Weapons:

Cutlass (image).

Dagger.

A variety of blades hidden in his boots and up his sleeves.

Eric the Dane

Physical Description:
  • Image in full "war"drobe; image w/o shirt; gif of naked backside
  • 26 years old
  • 5'10", fit.
  • Flowing, slightly curly, brunette hair down past his shoulders.
    • Often worn back in various braided styles.
    • In private, though, it is usually loose.
  • Various scars from blades, arrows (to be explained at some point).

Personality Description:
  • Bold and confident; unafraid of death, though, not eager to meet it too soon either.
  • Ambitious: he wants to take back SortVand, which is his birthright, as well as take additional English lands as punishment for the English slaughter of his grandfather's people at SortVand years earlier.
  • Lustful:
    • As Earl, he can bed any Thrall (slave) who is not a favoriserede pige for fornøjelsens skyld (favored/first girl for sexual pleasure), more commonly referred to just as a pige. A pige is sexually available only to her master/mistress unless otherwise given permission to service another. Often, they are loved by their master/mistress, as much as or even more so than a wife/husband.
    • Eric's current pige is Moira, a Scottish slave girl. She was first his mother's pige and house slave, but she was given to Eric as a gift when he became Earl of Kjelst upon his grandfather's death.

Earl of Kjelst:
  • Location:
    • Kjelst is on the west coast of Denmark.
    • It sits at the north end of Ho Bay (Ho Bugt).
    • Ho Bay reaches north and inland from where Esbjerg looks out upon the North Sea.
  • Size:
    • ~800 residents (including Thralls, Karls, and Jarls; slaves, freemen, and nobles).
    • In 902 AD, the population of the Kingdom of Denmark is ~150,000.
    • With hundreds of villages both larger and smaller, 800 residents places Kjelst near the median village size for the era.
  • Politics:
    • Theoretically, the Kingdom of Denmark includes all of the Jutland Peninsula (the peninsular portion of Denmark) and some of the islands to the east in the Baltic Sea controlled by Danes is ~150,000.
    • Although
    • To the English, he will come to be known as Eric the Dane.

Moira was no stranger to pleasuring other women before. Her first sexual experience, as was true with many girls wishing to preserve their purity yet also fulfill their sexual needs, had been with her cousin, Aila. Soon after that, she'd been captured and given to Eric's mother, Astrid, who used her as a servant and bed warmer. Astrid spent many nights alone as did many wives of warriors who spent half of the year away from home raiding. Astrid trained Moira to fill in for her missing Viking husband.

Later, when she was given to Eric for his own pleasure, Moira quickly came to miss the touch and feel of another woman. And while she presumed she would enjoy such interaction with the English redhead, Moira's reason for offering was actually that she thought pleasing Mylecent would please Eric.
