Tom felt he had an inkling of where Josephine might be going with her question. If he was right, it could at least mean a much needed break from the weekly grind of travelling the arts fair circuit. Working with oils would mean even more time with the sweet young heiress than he had anticipated. He felt no need to exaggerate with his answer; whatever time he could spend near Karen was already a bonus.

Having seen that Karen's school outfit was complete beneath the blazer, with a short pleated grey skirt and matching knee socks, Tom's eyes had strayed her way often as she made her way from one guest to another seeking kisses. Tom felt another warm pang of appreciation, watching her kneel beside the professor. How would he ever keep the professional distance necessary to finish the work if she decided to . . . . to what? Tom avoided speculating about future challenges to his concentration. The present ones were enough. He looked back to Josephine.

"Well . . . it's hard for me to say. Oils are wonderful for subtle skin tones. It's not my usual medium, so I need to work rather slowly to get the best results. There's also the fact that with oils you sometimes need to wait a few days to let the paint dry sufficiently before continuing. And . . . I must be honest with you -- I have some doubts that Karen would wish to sit idly for several hours every day.

So . . . I'm guessing I would need at least two or three weeks to complete it, assuming the young lady was able to pose for, . . . say, a few hours every couple of days or so. And assuming I could arrange reliable transportation here, or wherever we meet for the sittings. Unfortunately, I don't have a car of my own.

But . . . I couldn't guarantee that the time needed wouldn't be double that, possibly even more."

Carl kept his cool as Samantha poured his coffee then when she casually dropped her linen cloth below his chair and bent down to pick it up he kept a neutral look on his face.

Everyone else seemed to be captivated with either Karen's bold movements around the table to get her birthday kisses, or Josephines discussion with the artist about Karen's portrait.

Tom turned around at the tap on his shoulder. "Hello," he said, smiling at the petite blonde. He extended his hand and smiled. "I'm Tom Avery. Happy Birhday!"

Tom recalled that when Josephine had called Karen a "minx," there was some humor in her voice. But there had also been considerable affection for her heir. Now he could see why. Looking into her eyes he sensed there was more to her than merely impudence or flirtatiousness. Intelligence, for one thing.

Tom had expected Karen to offer a kiss in fairly short order, but she did more than offer. His reaction surprized him, but with her arms around him, there was simply no way to resist responding as he felt about her.
