Chicago Litogether 2009 Range Trip

Same here. I think that's probably all most people do, which is why I was thinking the price might be a bit high...

For the most part. I just liked the fact that it was out of state, fit our desires for both rifle and pistol, and was heated. Haven't really been able to find another place remotely like that yet

Neither have I. Just want to see what others think.

I'm good. Given the company that comes included in the price, it's fair. And then we can find someplace disreputable and/or redneck for lunch.

hehe wooo...LPO gave me time off tomorrow so gonna be able to ensure teh rifle is sighted in

Okay... I feel the need to chime in here for another legal addendum.

First off, I am also a safety nazi as I was a marksmanship instructor and a certified Range Safety NCO for the Army. So I do not tolerate stupidity when it comes to firearms.
Inexperience is one thing, that is understandable and I love helping people learn to shoot. :D

Also, most everyone knows that I have a good working knowledge of the requirements for air travel.... so for any out-of-state gun owners who are flying... and considering bringing their firearm(s) - here are the rules.

1) You must have it stored UNLOADED in a LOCKED & HARD SIDED case. Whether you have it somewhere inside a hard-shelled suitcase, or a small hard-sided gun case (locked) inside a duffel bag... either way is fine.

2) It ABSOLUTELY MUST go in your checked baggage - the stuff that you hand to the airlines when you get your boarding pass.

3) You must DECLARE your firearm(s) to the airline. This is very simple to do. When you check in for your flight, tell the agent that you are checking a firearm and they will hand you a small form to fill out - possibly two of the same one. Fill the form out (it typically has your name, the date, and flight number on it) - this form does not declare ownership, should not require serial numbers... etc... all it is, is a notice to TSA and any inspectors that the airline is aware a firearm is being carried in that bag. You should have a copy of the declaration for you to carry as well.

Failure to do any of the above three may not lead to a pleasant experience (IE - loss of firearm, arrest, etc... depending on what you do).

4) Ammunition - If you choose to fly with your ammunition, keep it in the manufacturer's packaging as that conforms to all Dept. of Transportation requirements for shipment of ammunition. The ammunition does NOT need to be inside the locked container, nor does it need to be declared. Ammunition MUST be inside your checked baggage as it obviously would not be allowed through the checkpoint.

If you have any questions regarding this or any of the liquids policies for security if you are flying... please PM me and I will answer any questions you have....

Also... for rifle buffs... I will be bringing my Remmington 700 30-06. :D

Excuse me, but I've got to ask... This is a Litogether. A gathering of porn writers, fueled by booze, nudity, obscenity, and craziness. Why must you bring your firearms to such an event? Can't you go 3 or 4 days without shooting a gun? I mean, it's great that there'll be so many "safety nazi's" there, but that just seems like asking for more trouble, as in, "Oh, what can possibly happen, there'll be a bunch of safety nazi's there!"

We're going to have like 40 or 50 drunks crowded into one floor of an overheated hotel, half of them naked, all of them horny and trying to get laid and impress each other, at least one of them probably on drugs and hopped up on cigar smoke, and we're going to have guns all over the place. Doesn't anyone else think there's something wrong with this picture?

What if we were talking about butcher knives instead of guns? How about I get together a group and we all bring our butcher knives to the Litogether? I'm a well known butcher knife safety nazi and I won't tolerate any foolishness with butcher knives, so lets keep them in their cases and just have fun with our butcher knives. We can take them up to a butcher shop in Wisconsin on Saturday and do a little practice cutting just for the hell of it. How would that idea go over?

I'm not saying there's anything wrong with guns. I am saying there's something wrong with mixing guns with booze and sex and an organization whose reputation we're trying to protect. We're already going to have a hard time keeping the lid on this gathering. It seems to me guns are like the last thing we need. You can't tell me that, with all these guns there, people aren't going to be showing off their pieces to each other in their rooms, waving them around, and generally acting like an NRA meeting. Even if no one gets hurt, this is going to be very disruptive and upsetting. It's a very bad idea.

-quirks an eyebrow- You have recieved a PM in regards to this statement.

I don't think Zoot meant it in a demeaning way.

And historically, not everyone who possesses firearms acts in a safe and sane manner.

Smokers have to go outside.

Gun owners can go to the range to share.

Which you were going to do anyway.

That was the plan, yes.

After reading Doc's post here, I went back to the beginning of the thread. I'd missed the part where people mentioned that they planned to bring firearms to the Litogether.

I'm sorry, folks, but I will not attend a drunken party knowing that there are several of the revelers have firearms only a few feet away in their rooms.

It's my good fortune, though, to live nearby. I'll be happy to meet Litsters offsite for some coffee, breakfast, or a drink but I will not be setting foot into the hotel under these conditions.

Enjoy yourselves, folks. Let me know when you plan a gun-free Litogether and I'll plan to attend.

I agree with Dr. M. I don't think it's a good idea, and I don't care how safe everyone claims to be. You're not the problem, Jag. The problem, as I told you via PM is that you don't really know these people. It's not safe. YOU may be safe, but that doesn't guarantee everyone else will be.

I'm seriously considering whether I really want to be there now, as well, and I can tell you for sure that I'm not the only one. There are others who are not speaking up.

The guns need to be left at home. This is not the place or time for them.

Sarah, you can't seriously be comparing smoking with guns, can you? Do you think somebody could be killed by someone else's cigarette?

You can't guarantee that people will only share at the range, especially when they start drinking.

After reading these posts... as well as Dr. M's... I will most definately be leaving mine at home.

I do agree that firearms and liquor have no business being in proximity to each other.

Well it just seems odd to me. Were I the world's most avid fisherman, I wouldn't be bringing fishing tackle to a Litogether, which is a 3-day gathering of porn authors and has little to do with fishing. But what you want to do with your time is fine with me.

My main concern is: we're going to have like 40 fairly crazy, horny people taking over the entire floor of a suburban hotel for 3 days and nights, wandering from room to room, some of them in states of partial undress, and in general acting like a giant high school sleepover, and I'm just worried about things getting out of hand. It wouldn't take much for police to be called and for some nasty publicity to ensue if some people got overenthusiastic. It just doesn't seem wise to me to throw guns into this mix, especially when there's no need for them.

I'm not saying anyone's going to get drunk and start blasting away, but you know... Cops come, find out there are guns in a room, and FOID or no, there's going to be big, big trouble. You want tp shoot, at least leave the guns at home.
