I have an old painting, and I'm trying to find out if it's worth anything before I throw it out. I cant see any signature or numbers on it to help me identify it.

Anybody got any ideas, short of taking it to an antiques dealer?

How old is old? What's the subject, what's the style? BTW, have you looked on the back? Any labels? Maybe post a picture of the picture.

It's about 30 years old.
Style? Ummm...it's a painting of a vase of flowers, and I can see and feel the brush lines. That's it.
Yes I've looked on the back. No labels.
I won't be posting a picture. No digicam.

Stretcher canvas? And if so, plastic shims or wood?

That's why I'm doing this.

I don't want to get rid of it, and then see it on the antiques road show for £50k.

Don't be so lazy. Do your own research.

BTW, IMHO, it looks like something you might find in an advanced art class. Around here anyways.

You had to borrow a camera to take pics of a garage sale?

There might be a signature or other information hidden inside the frame.

Unframing it won't affect its value.

If that's the original frame, it looks like something you'd be able to buy from a Sears or JC Penny catalogue in the late sixties or early seventies -- or a chain-store like Woolworth's. It looks like a mass-produced commercial painting to me.

If it IS a mass-produced painting, then there is likely some trace of it in old catalogues or advertising material and a lot of that stuff has been scanned onto the 'net fro researchers to browse.

Weird Harold is correct. (As usual)

This thing was designed to hang in a doctor's office bathroom or some other space that simply needs its walls broken up.

Donate it or chuck it out. Its damned ugly.

You know...

It's hard to believe that there's a medical condition known as "third degree burn" when I see art work as beautiful as this.
