When you were a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?

When I was small, I wanted to be a kumquat, before I knew what a kumquat was. I just thought it sounded cool. Then my dad took me up on the roof of his church and I saw the gargoyles up close and personal and I wanted to be the gargoyle on the northeast wall, second from the right. He had bat wings and big huge ears like a cat. He was also anatomically correct. And he had these huge fangs. After that, I wanted to be a lumberjack and live in the woods and wear flannel and eat pancakes.

So what did you want to be, and why?

Well . . . I told my mom I wanted to be a doctor (she was a raging screaming feminist), but I really wanted to be a hair dresser.

I wonder if it's too late?

My mom tells the story that when I was 6 I announced to the entire family that I wanted to be a jewel thief when I grew up.

Damn! Now I want to be a gargoyle too!

I think for me astronaut was a bit out of my league, so I toned it down to pilot. I watched Top Gun as a child and it stuck with me. :D

MAVERICK!!!!!!!

I wanted to be an astronaut. Now, I work in a warehouse. Yipee kyay, motherfuckers.

I wanted to be an accountant. I didn't know what it was, but I knew my dad had an accounting degree, and I was daddy's girl, so it seemed like the thing to do at the time. :)

I first wanted to be a pilot... an xwing pilot from Star Wars... because it seemed like they had good friends to cover their asses.. and I needed some friends like that...

Then I decided I would be a libriarian. Books.. safe.. quiet. I like.

I wish I could remember what I wanted to be when I was really little . I do know when I was about 10 one of our school projects was to write our 'autobiography'. I still remember the book had blue shiny paper with silver stars on it and a picture of me aged about 2 floating in a swim tube in a pool all tanned and blonde curls. I called my autobiography 'Simply Me'. The final part was saying what we hoped to become in the future. This may be in fact my single most embarassing admission in Lit to date. I wanted to be an Airline Hostess and married to a Policeman..........laughs

The kind of hostess we had back then elegant , coiffed, legs up to her arm pits, un ruffled in turbulence and serving 12 year old whiskey...........

oh my........

I always wanted to look after people.

I used to line up my teddies and dollies, pretend they needed made better.

From aged 2-6 I had one large teddy/rabbit thing. He was always in the corner because he was bad and would not behave properly. He was always hurting the other toys. I always had him in the games though, just he ended up in the corner.
Aged 6 I gave him to the local hospital. I told my mum he needed to be there and they would help him.

The dollies and toys never had physical injuries it was always 'she can't talk properly,' 'this one can't eat.' etc.

There is a little girls magazine in the UK called Twinkle, the front page used to have Nurse Nancy on it. She had a dollies hospital. I used to want to work in her hospital and make the 'odd' toys better.

Aged 12 I realised I wanted to work with people who have learning disabilities/mental handicap/ mental retardation/call it what you will.

Now, reading this thread I think I was dull :(

I wish I had wanted to be a Kumquat, a lion tamer or gargoyle.
Is it too late to want these things now?
Imagine having to fill in forms that ask for your job, that would be fun.
(Is the thought of form filling increasing your thoughts that I am dull)

As for you Miss Rebecca: get over to the dull corner with me RIGHT NOW!!!, Air hostess with a policeman indeed

I had a few things I wanted to be depending on the moment and age and mood...hey, I'm a Gemini so it seemed natural to be chameleon like and adapt to the moment!! Some were a pirate, pirate's captive, native American and Aboriginal (in their time, not ours of course), captain of a tall ship, deep sea diver, stripper (that was the popular name in my youthful very pre preteens), tramp/slut, then my more boring side wanted things like mother, writer, singer, schoolteacher...these had to continually fight with those more interesting vocational desires.

Catalina :rose:

I wanted to be a movie star or a rock singer... I'm well on my way to both those careers.

I wanted to be a dancer. I did study a bit, but became a costume designer instead. It was fun for a while until reality set in, and I hated being broke all the time.

A fireman - they drove a way cool truck, slid down a pole, ate chili just about everyday and I walked past the firestation everyday on the way to school and they all said "Hi" when I wenl by.

hmmm, I still like firemen. Now it must have something to do with that pole.

I wanted to be a marine biologist... or anything but a nurse.
Every woman in my maternal line's involved in the medical field.

What am I doing now? Ordering around EMT's and Paramedics and a few nurses for an ambulance company.

I wanted to be a truck driver. My family did alot of road trips in when I was younger and would stop at truck stops in the middle of the night for gas and a few hours of sleep. Truckers were tough and had awsome muscles and the trucks were always gorgeous....Now all I see is a bunch of fat greasy old men and the trucks....well the trucks are still awsome. Then I wanted to be a house mom.. Well right now I AM a house mom and I think despite all of the wonderful  days with my baby that it's an overglorified job. I don't like it.

Now I want to be an officer in the AirForce. I'm on my way, I've gotten back into college to finish my degree and then when I'm 1yr until my graduation I have to apply for the officers school. Everyone I know is confident that I'll get in.

First I wanted to be a pilot; then I wanted to be a professional wrestler. I'm way too old and out of shape to start on that second career idea... :p

I had periods when I wanted to be a reporter, photographer, writer... Then I realized that the chances of making it in any of those professions is next to nil. Thought about being a computer programmer, but the tech got away from me when GUIs became the industry standard in OSs...

I've been a lot of things in my life: general retail employee, warehouse worker, rough carpenter, manager, salesman, general laborer, house painter, machinist... If it's legal, and you don't need certification or special licenses, chances are I've done it for money.

And I still don't know what I want to do for a living. :p

When I was little?

I wanted to be a Mommy/Missionary/Teacher/Preacher combining all the things my rents had done or were.

But that was when I was little.

I've wanted to be lots of things since then.

Fury :rose:

I just realized I've done or am doing all of those things in one way or another. Wow. Head trip.

Tell me about it......laughs......I make myself cringe but its the truth.

Hey btw reading down the thread I see we are getting later stage projections (damn cheaters) perhaps later I'll add some of mine including the ones I have actually realized. I am cool dammit......nene neh neh ne neh ne can't touch meeeeeeh.

Wanders off wondering if the French Underground counts..........

A few things have stuck with me throughout the years since my childhood. I've always wanted to be a teacher, but young kids these days? I don't think I have the patience. I'd probably go for middle school or higher. A college Professor would be fun! Other than that, being a marriage/relationship Therapist would be an ideal job for me...teaching men and women how to communicate with each other would be SO fullfilling!

I don't know why I never wanted to do anything else...it seems like those are the only 2 careers I've ever thought about.

Like Vixandra, I wanted to be a marine biologist. That lasted only until I found out "marine biologist" was not the same thing as "dolphin trainer."

I went through the usual ballerina phase, too.

I settled on teaching when I was pretty young, and that stuck with me for a while. I intended to get my degree in Education but I ended up dropping out.

These days I'd like to be a professional web surfer. :D

But I ended up a sign language interpreter, and I do love my job, so I will be sticking with it as long as I can. I have had a lifelong love of languages, so it's a good fit for me.
