Rednecks - the other side of the story

Rednecks - the other side of the story

We have enjoyed the redneck jokes for years. It's time to take a reflective look at the core beliefs of a culture that values home, family, country and God. If I had to stand before a dozen terrorists who threaten my life, I'd choose a half dozen or so rednecks to back me up. Tire irons, squirrel guns and grit -- that's what rednecks are made of. I hope I am one of those. If you feel the same, pass this on to your redneck friends. Y'all know who ya' are...

You might be a Redneck if:

1. It never occurred to you to be offended by the phrase, "One nation, under God."

2. You've never protested about seeing the 10 Commandments posted in public places.

3. You still say "Christmas" instead of "Winter Festival."

4. You remove your hat and bow your head when anyone prays.

5. You stand and place your hand over your heart when they play our National Anthem.

6. You treat Viet Nam vets with great respect, and always have.

7. You've never burned an American flag, but would kick someone's ass that did.

8. You know what you believe and you aren't afraid to say so, no matter who is listening.

9. You respect your elders and expect your kids to do the same.

10. You'd give your last dollar to a friend.

1 I don't offend that easy.
2 Nope does not bother me at all.
3 I say Christmas.
4 Nope if some one is praying that is their biz not mine.
5 Yep, and I might even sing.
6 I do now, I always have.
7 never burned one, could care less if some one else does.
8 That's me.
9 As long as they do not do anything to lose it, but that goes for every one.
10 Fuck no not if I or my family needed it.

THat's me

I'm English so forgive me if I don't fully appreciate the varying degrees of "redneckness"! Wasn't Timothy McVeigh a stereotypical redneck? Is it reasonable to assume that he does not represent the views of all other rednecks? If so isn't it reasonable to also assume that most Muslims are not terrorists and that Osama bin Laden no more represents Muslims than Timothy McVeigh represented rednecks?

McVeigh was a god damned terrorist. I'm a redneck and proud of it. I'd kill a fucker like McVeigh given the opportunity.

on the other end of that spectrum I'm more likely to be called a nigger and terrorized by a redneck than by other whites so selective brotherhood is doing what the terrorist do only with those you like. Jesus said if you do good to those you like what good are you doing even the pagans do that to their kind, if you want to impress me embrace someone different who has proven that they're sincere and trustworthy. this country moves not by one particular group of people but by everyone who believes in freedom and justice for all

For god sakes I posted it and I gave my thoughts on it. Read what I think. Just because I posted something does not mean I agree with it all. Besides there are some virtues in this list. Ones that all of us can embrace. There are plenty of racist bastards I have met right here in Boston. There are shit heads from all walks of life, as well as good people from those same walks. Praise the good, and despise the bad on a individual basis, or you are just as wrong as them.

I don't personally know (IRL) many people who believe a "redneck" stands as a positive reflection of any of those values.

Again, I believe the put-upon classes of society adopt derrogatory identifiers ("redneck", "nigger", etc.) for themselves, and morph the original context of the terms. Keep the words if you like, but rich, white folk are the ones who perpetuated those terms - so, you're essentially kissing their asses if you use them.

I'm a redneck (Virginia). Timothy McVeigh was a mentally ill SOB.

I might be kissing my own ass then. :D. I have found that people who are confident in themselves, regardless of class casting, tend to shy from derogatory terms. It has nothing to do with being rich or white or any thing else.

I have a black neighbor who would never stand for being called a nigger, and punished his kid for using derogatory terms about Asians neighbors. In my quiet little hood, we take care of our neighbors.

5) Herschal Walker played for "dem dogs"

7) 318 I believe

9) A chigger is an irritating little red bug that bites the heck out of you. There are tons of them in Spanish Moss

10) Scrapple is what's for breakfast

I can see the Blue Ridge from my porch, but heck if I know why it's blue.

23) Vidalia Georgia....sweet onions

Exactly.

So, when I hear anyone refer to themselves as a "redneck" or a "nigger", I tend to write them off.

Or they just could be proud of what they are, or at least the good traits about what they are.

I've never actually called myself a "redneck" or a "hick". I get defensive because it's a class of people I grew up around but don't belong with.

Why do you say you don't belong with them?

an act rendering words of oppression or division powerless.

that's basically what I said, in summation, don't get me wrong some of my best friends are rednecks but being born in South Carolina back in the 50's I experienced the extreme terrorism of redneckism first hand, and no I'm not condemming those who use that as a badge of honor if you're proud of that heritage so be it from my perspective i'm not only proud to be a black man but to be a man born in America, the greatest country today, I'm just tired of the divisionism, truth be told no one group can survive without the other that's why we're a multicultural nation and why we've survived as long as we have thank God for rednecks, but thank God for that italian, japanese american, black american, native american and all other americans that contributed to making this country the bastion of democracy it is even though we need to improve on how we treat all fellow americans

I got that when I reread your post. I can not fathom what your life was like in those days. I agree united we stand divided we fall. Smarter people then I have stated that we need to clean out own house before we try to do to much more.

people forget "simpler" times included african-americans and women being subjugated to the roles of second-class citizens.
