I'd suggest you do thorough research to get at the truth, though. Mormon.org will give you as skewed information as any source putting the religion down, so beware.
My mother's mother and her sister were both able to divorce themselves from being Mormon. One used a noose, the other a gun. No suicide notes were necessary; everyone knew why they did what they did.
Read some testimonials (better yet, get them in person), and you'll start to hear a pattern. Once you start reading about the "planets" and so forth, you'll get the picture of where their mindset is at.

I'd say, just from what I know and from a couple friends I have, that the entire history of the Mormon Church in America is as complicated as any story you're likely to read. I can't imagine that any other organized religion has been vilified as much as it has, nor can I recall our government organizing to stamp out a religion like they did with the Mormon Church back in the day.

At it's core though, Mormonism believes a lot of scientifically and historically suspect ideas and has been embroiled in controversy over hoaxes, petty crimes, murders, and massacres for a lot of its existence -- much of it they brought upon themselves.
