The year was 1929 and it was the beginning of October, at the very height of the Roaring Twenties, and no one expected that soon the decade would close out not with a whimper, but a bang. Hemlines were rising and booze was king, especially in the criminal underworld that rocked New Orleans. Despite the efforts of a few cops to keep liquor off the streets, all it took was a bit of cash to keep business booming during the prohibition.
Our story begins below a boarding house for "sophisticated ladies", though in truth they were much more worldly than advertised. From the door leading to the basement, one could hear the sound of a saxophone playing. Around the corner, a young woman with red hair and a white flapper dress stepped out from the shadows, appearing for her first night on the job.
Though for many this decade was filled with riches and glamour, some had not been able to rise up from their status. Anna was one of those unfortunates born into poverty and still struggling to make their way through the world. Though her mama wanted an easy life for her, to simply find a wealthy husband using her charms, the young girl had refused. It was a fantasy, and the only way to truly survive was for her to make her own money.
Taking a deep breath, she walked into the building, coughing slightly at the smoke that filled the hallway. A few of the "working women" were leading clients up to their rooms, giving the new girl a once over as they passed. She inhaled sharply. - little nervous as she reminded herself Johnny, the owner, had promised she'd only be doing entertainment.
Stepping into the crowded basement, she began making her way towards the stage, feeling small as she pushed past much taller men, her five foot stature making it difficult to see much. She let out a small cry as she stumbled into a wealthy looking woman and her husband, her cheeks turning a bright pink as she stepped back. "S... sorry ma'am," her accent thick as she looked up at the woman with wide eyes
