My magic wand is in need of repair. It's not dead yet, but I can tell the bearings need lubrication. Normally this would be pretty easy for me, but I can't figure out how to get it open. The cast aluminum in the head is screwed onto the spring in such a way as to self tighten when I try to unscrew it. There's a screw holding the silver ring in place, but I can't get at it without removing the head.

Can anyone figure out this puzzle?

Never mind; I got it. It turns out I can bend the head back to expose the screw on the silver ring, after which the whole thing comes apart easily. I unscrewed all the pieces, and cleaned out all the graphite dust created by the motor brushes. I greased the spring drive shaft and oiled the motor bearings. Now it runs with less friction, and will hopefully last forever.

Time to go get it dirty again...

What kind of oil and grease did you use?

Our MW could probably use the same treatment since it's running a little rough and louder these days; although for the time it's already given us and cost, I really don't have a problem buying a new one when this one dies.

I used mineral oil on the motor bearings, and lithium grease on the spring shaft. In general, the rule for oil vs. grease is to use oil on parts which have constant contact like bearings, and grease on parts with intermittent contact, like gear teeth, or the spring drive.

It really helps to remove all the lint and dust from everything too.

Also, to clean the head, use acetone. It's PCV, so it won't melt. I've even used clear PVC primer on it before. Don't get it on the rest of the wand, or you'll have a sticky lump of melted vibrator.

OK, thanks. I'll see if Hubby can do the maintenance.

Do you think WD40 would work on the motor bearings, or is that not a good idea? Oddly enough, I think we have some lithium grease, but no mineral oil.

No! Never ever use WD40 for lubrication. It's good for removing rusted bolts, and nothing else. It will gum up quickly and destroy the bearings.

Use any lightweight machine oil, three-in-one oil, or even sewing machine oil if you have it. I only used mineral oil because I happened to have a syringe full of it sitting on my workbench. All you need is a drop or two on each end of the motor.

I had a terrible, terrible nightmare that my Magic Wand died. It was horrible! I woke up in a cold sweat! I was trembling and shaking!

I had to have a drink to calm my nerves.

My husband kept telling me, "It was only a bad dream, calm down. It was just a dream."

Post pics!

Totally agree on all accounts. Just about everyone has some 3-in-1 oil laying around.

Here you go.

A small fan draws air in by the head to cool the motor. Normally this is a good design, but someone forgot the air needs somewhere to go--there is no exit vent. This is probably why they slapped the 25 minute time constraint on its use.

The circuit is a pretty simple design, but they really cut corners with the motor. Sure it's big and powerful enough, but it's a cheap brushed DC motor instead of a quality AC induction motor. Since it's a DC motor, it uses a full wave bridge rectifier to convert the AC to choppy DC. The low speed is created by inserting another diode in series, effectively cutting the power in half. It's a common design.

I included a schematic as well.

Maybe the cutting the power in half thing was intentional. ;) Quite a few people find the high powered Hitachi to be overkill when used directly on their bare privates, as it is.

Yes, that how low speed works. It's a perfectly viable design, but it's lazy. Personally I find it's easier to use over clothing anyway.

And this is precisely why I love Lit. You can get a sangria recipe, find some new porn links and figure out how to maintain/fix your sex toy from someone who is uber helpful. Thanks for posting that. I loved my Hitachi, but it died a tragic death. I have found the Adam and Eve wand to be longer lasting. I love it so much, I keep a backup.

Heh. I've had the same nightmare.

I remember when the Hitachi first came out and my girlfriends and I were chatting about how it's so powerful, you could rub your hoo-ha off. I can't use the wand vibes at full speed. Or if I do, it's .... wow.

Guy thing? You're talking to a girl who has a subscription to Maxim. Maxim semiconductor.

I'll post some pics later. It's an interesting, but cheap design.

Better techno porn.

You were lured in by the free samples, weren't you? Sign up for a chance at a few free ICs, then get your inbox invaded on a regular basis. I've got no less than 5 semiconductor companies mailing me crap now. :p

(And another +1 for Futurama.)

Free samples are awesome, and they've never sent me any uninvited mail. I actually signed up for their monthly design guide because they contain very good ideas, and aren't always Maxim specific.

I have never tried one, but use one that is similar but a lot cheaper. I have realized that the vibrations are not strong enough to justify buying another one since this ones life is cumming to an end. How strong are the vibrations offered by the magic wand? Im looking for something that rivals a chainsaw motor between your legs.
I used to use a neck massage vibe thingie, without the u shaped cup. The vibrations were intense and I could use it through my clothing, multiple times. It was so good that I repaired the cord on it (soldered the leads back on when the wires broke down) and replaced the switch... Ive never found a vibe that can compare to that one.

I need a lot of focused stimulation and the LOW speed on the MW is plenty strong. I might use the high speed through clothing or when I'm not getting good contact, but the other 99% of the time, low works great. Based on what I've heard, this is a fairly common experience, so you could probably say it's the gas-powered chainsaw of vibes.

There's one caveat, though: I have to use an attachment with the Wand. The stimulation the head itself provides is too diffuse and just makes me itchy, but the g-spot attachment is just perfect for clitoral and vaginal stimulation (we've dedicated the straight attachment to anal, even though they can be sanitized).

Thanks for the reply. That is good to hear, so I think well be adding a Magic Wand to our collection soon. Its interesting that you say that the straight attachment was dedicated to anal, as this is something that we would be very interested in. You should get commission for your advice.

Try the Sybian. That is true power. Once you ride Syb, you're spoiled for life, no kidding.

Seems to me

You have the background and where with all to drill a few exhaust holes for the internal fan. After all, you stripped that bad boy down . . .

Very sexy thread. Have you considered posting an audio file?

My wife has two just in case...we keep them on opposite sides of the bed so that she can reach down on either side. If one stops...we'll buy another...kind of like a RAID setup

I suppose I could drill some vents, but it rarely gets hot enough to warrant another place to collect lint and dust.

What do you mean by an audio file?
